Video Editing/Rendering Machine

Thread Starter
So I've gotten big into video editing. I'll but running into some money in the next few weeks and think I will spend it on a new rig. I will say "no budget", but I'm not going to put quad 580s lol.

What are the most important factors in video rendering speed? Would a dual CPU board be best?

Thanks!

Duel socket system would be very nice, but it depends on your level of use....as a hobbist a i7 2600k/2700k would be fine, you should wait a little SB-E is coming out in a week or so though. That is where the top performance will be. Maybe even look into the AMD opterons.

One important thing when it comes to editing is the amount of RAM ,the more the better. If you get a say 16GB that would be fine, but 32GB and up would be great. Why? You can make RAM drives off you RAM. then you can use them as temp file holders and scratch disks. Performance in editing will go up greatly.

Also a lot of storage for you data, a few raid 0 arrays would be good and a good back up method as well.

Also, what app are you using to edit? if premiere pro get a gtx 580 or something with a bunch of cuda cores.

I'll think of other things too lol. Have a question just ask

I am using Premiere Pro CS5.

What other questions you got for me? haha

I have looked it up, but can't figure it out. How can I make it use more RAM? I currently have 16GB in my rig, so I have plenty to use for the RAM render?

lol, the one question I am not sure on...I think in the render settings depending on what files type you are using you will use more or less RAM.

Ohhh I found this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereff...32AB4723a.html

Quote:
RAM Reserved For Other Applications
Increase this value to leave more RAM available for the operating system and for applications other than After Effects and the application with which it shares a memory pool. (See Memory pool shared between After Effects, Premiere Pro, Encore, and Adobe Media Encoder.) If you know that you will be using a specific application along with After Effects, check its system requirements and set this value to at least the minimum amount of RAM required for that application. Because performance is best when adequate memory is left for the operating system, you can’t set this value below a minimum baseline value.

I just built this for a client
http://www.overclock.net/intel-build...ied-raid0.html
He said his GPU (570) rarely goes over 50% usage. I think 570 is pretty safe. So I would focus funds towards CPU hopefully wait for x79 and get a good RAID array or large SSD for work drive (but with prices the way they are for HD I would seriously think of going with large SSD or hybrid SSD at the moument). Ram is cheap and you could get two 16gb kits (32gb) for under $250 with a 8 dimm motherboard for x79.

Ah, thanks!

Are the three most important factors CPU speed, cores, and RAM?

Whenever I render, my machine never used more than 3GB (of 16) of RAM. My GPU hardly gets utilized at all, if at all period. Are there some settings I can alter to change this?

Scratch disks are very important. I haven't edited video in a long time but I remember having 3 scratch volumes and that made all the difference.

CPU speed/core and disk are most important then GPU then RAM.

Since HD prices are so high consider these

Oh and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820162030
was really good to for a card reader with USB 3.0. We are getting 75mb/s on CF card transfers. This is good for getting video to the PC.

Get SSDs to use as scratch disks, RAID 0 volumes for assets, other stuff and one for you output. A dual socket rig would be best 16-32GBs of ram is good enough and if you want to go hardcore with the graphics card get a quadro card
