6990's bottleneck ?

Thread Starter
hey,

i got amd 1090t oc 4.2ghz and dual 6990's aka quad fire.

if i play bf3 for example, the 4 gpu's dont go higher than 40% usage, usually 30%-40% usage.

if i disable crossfire and use 1 6990, the 2 gpus go to 50-55% usage each.

is this caused by bottleneck?

if i use furmark and stress the cards, all 4 gpu's max out 96%-99% usage.

i have not tried any other intensive games just yet.

if it's bottleneck, will a OC'd bulldozer release them?

BD would help, but quite frankly you need Intel to get some serious clockspeed to really open those cards up. Plus you only seem to be using a single 23" display which is nowhere near enough resolution for those cards to start stretching their legs. 2560x1600 or surround is what your looking for to make them work harder.

Its more than definitely a bottleneck by your 1090T. And I am certain that it is the problem. I had this exact same issue, I have SLI 580's and previously I was running them with a 1090T at 4.0Ghz. Just like you I was only getting about 40% card usage on each, along with terrible fps. Everyone was telling me it was a bottle neck and I wasn't believing them..

I ended up switching over to a I2500k this Friday since microcenter had an amazing sale.. Bumped it up to about 4.0 Ghz at first and booted up BF3 and bam, right away 95-98% usage on both cards with beautiful FPS.. Never going back to AMD after this experience.

I disagree that BD would help.. I'd rather see him get a Athlon 640 than the 8core BD. BD does extremely horrible in multi gpu systems.

no, i have 3x 23" for eyefinity setup. but! unfortunately BF3 is broken with eyefinity right now so unable to use.

I am aware of those issues, but i said BD would help for one reason. It's a logical upgrade path and cheaper than buying a new mobo/CPU. But unfortunately Intel is the only way to go it seems with super high end cards.

Well, if it was me with 2x 6990's i'd get SB-E on November 14th. Might as well have a high end CPU/Mobo config with those expensive cards.

Just get an I5 it will provide more than enough power until Ivy Bridge.
