Low FPS and low GPU usage BF3

Thread Starter
I'm playing BF3 on all ultra settings with no AA using 2 5770's in crossfire and their keeping it in the high 40's low 50's FPS. After I play the game for a while the FPS will randomly drop to the single digits, then come back up and back down. I noticed when the FPS drops the GPU usage (on both cards) will drop as well (observed on my second monitor using Afterburner).

I'm confident it’s not a temperature issue, both cards stay under 80*.

I was wondering if I'm running out of VRAM? My buddy plays on the same settings with his GTX480 and Afterburner says he is using ~1400megs. My cards only have 1gb, but Afterburner says its using ~1920megs (which is impossible from what I understand since crossfire doesn't share the VRAM between the cards).

Any ideas?

Are you using the newest ati driver? I do not have an ati card at the moment but i noticed on their website something about the new driver being very good at scaling xfire specifically for bf3. And no, your cards do not add together for the vram. 2x 1gb cards = 1gb vram

Could you update you system specs as well. That might help determine something. Thanks!

Sounds like vram to me. Try lowering everything to medium and see if the FPS still drops to single digits, if not, try out high

Afterburner shows the combined GPU Vram usage. So you seeing 1920MB would equal 960MB for each card. Crossfire works by having the second card render the image simultaneously after the first card and matches the Vram amount used by the first card.

The best option would be to tone down the Shadows and Advanced Post Processing or something similar as those two options are the drains for your Vram.

I turned it down to High and had no problem. Vram stayed around 1600mb. I decided to turn it back to ultra and I'm currently playing with each setting to find which one had the biggest effect on the ram.

But its defiantly a vram issue. I'll watch afterburner and as soon as the ram starts to fill up my GPU usage starts to fluctuate badly along with my FPS. If I leave it on High settings my ram never fills up and both GPU's stay at 100%.

What's your CPU usage like? Is your CPU overclocked? There are a couple of benchmarks that show CPU usage going through the roof on Ultra, but not on High settings in Crossfire setups. It could be VRAM, but I have not read on any benchmarks anything about major stutter with 1GB cards in Ultra. Low FPS in general yes, but not complete dropouts.

I had the same exact issue. Just changed to the new stuff in my Sig, ignore that.

I had 6GB of DDR2 and it was filling up so fast. I would see drops into the single digits. I started using Game Booster and it definitely helped. Would shut down all the unnecessary crap in the background. Allowed me to play without lockups.

Then I upgraded my gear. The 5770's really started to shine after that. They can hang with the 6970 I have right now. All settings Ultra, but no MSAA.

Its stays around 50% most of the time. The CPU and GPU's are currently not overclocked (in an attempt to keep my room from turning into an oven). I had the CPU at 4ghz for a while. I may overclock both again to see how it does.
