Overclocking my E8500

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Hi all, im new here. I signed up because i dont know a ton about overclocking and i want to overclock my E8500. Basically at the moment i cant afford a new system but i ordered myself a new 6970 so i figured it was a good time to do it.

I realize that even with a good overclock im going to be getting a bottleneck on the cpu but i just want to run skyrim on high, possibly ultra and battlefield 3 on medium-high for the time being. In a few months i'll grab a new cpu/mobo/ram.

Anyways, im running a P5Q pro and 4 gigs DDR2. I Did some research and i think im good to go here or at least close. I have my ram running at 800Mhz, the FSB at 400Mhz and my vcore is at 1.243V. The timing on the ram i have set to auto which is the default 5-5-5-15. This is getting me 3.8Ghz, any lower on the vcore i get errors in prime 95.

Im wondering if i missed anything or did anything wrong mainly, but i was also worried about my temps. I think there fine for a C2D but you be the judge. Im getting mid 40's idle and 55-60 on both cores under load using prime95 and holding there after 30mins.

This is my first overclock, so please let me know where i went wrong/right.

Thanks!

400MHz FSB is nothing with P5Q Pro as it can do easily stable 500MHz with C2Duo processor..

But then you would need at least 1000Mhz capable memory..

Anyways check out Official Asus P5Q Pro TURBO/Pro/TURBO owners club for more info on your setup.. (the link is in my sig)..

Also check out 1st page of that club for OC templates that could be useful to you..

Keep Vcore,FSB voltage and NB voltage under 1.40V for safe 24/7 operation..

Keep your core temperatures under 75C all the time..

What is the issue exactly?

E8500 shouldn't bottleneck anything even on stock

Really?

C'mon get real, he has a HD6970 so there's gonna be CPU bottleneck even when OC'd in some games..

Your E8500 will hold back a 6970 with newer games where they take advantage of quad cores. I came from a E8500 + asus P5k-e (mod with thermaltake spirit chipset cooler) setup and here are my voltage settings before I got 2500k 6 months ago.

FSB = 443mhz
FSB Strap = 333mhz
CPU Ratio = 9.5x
DRAM = 1:1 887mhz

CPU Vcore = 1.3375v (1.32 idle 1.312v load in cpu-z)
VTT = 1.1v
PLL = 1.5v
NB = 1.4v
SB = Auto
DRAM = 2.1v 4-4-4-12
LLC = enabled
Spread Spectrum = disabled

Everything else is on auto and runs prime95 blend 12+ hour stable idles at 31/38, 62/61 load prime95.

Max o/c was 4.5ghz as below

FSB = 500mhz
FSB Strap = 333mhz
CPU Ratio = 9x
DRAM = 1:1 1001mhz

CPU Vcore = 1.3875v (1.372 idle 1.368v load in cpu-z)
VTT = 1.2v
PLL = 1.6v
NB = 1.4v
SB = Auto
DRAM = 2.1v 5-5-5-15
LLC = enabled
Spread Spectrum = disabled

Prime 95 stable 12+ hours, 36/41c idle, 69/67c load.

Thanks, how long should i run prime for to make sure its stable, i see some guys going up to a day or so here. Also should i run it on blend? Was curious what the difference in the settings are.

Yes, E8500 bottlenecks a 6970... I really need to get around to doing some comparison benchmarks to show this...

OP: Welcome to OCN! You're going to have a blast OCing your E8500, stop by the P5Q owners club linked by KingT and we'll help you out.

Staying below 60C under load in Prime95 is great. What kind of cooling do you have? You might want to fill out your system specs in your forum control panel so that people can see what you have.

Yes run Prime95 BLEND test for 12hrs,if you pass w/o errors then you're solid..

Small FFT - tests only CPU (Vcore)
Large FFT - tests motherboard/FSB (vFSB a.k.a. VTT and vNB are important)
BLEND - tests everything ,CPU,motherboard and RAM

I have a XIGMATEK HDT-RS1283

Also, memory speed was something else i wanted to ask about... My memory is 1066, but from what i understand its better to go 1:1 with the bus speed right? Im guessing i could fix that though with a different multiplier and fsb speed right?
