Solutions needed for SLI - Small PCI-E slot space

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Basically, I want to get another 560Ti and put it in SLI.

I have this board:
Gigabyte X58 GA-EX58-UD3R - NOTE: The image is slightly different - I think I am a different Rev. #, but the space between slots is the same.
[High-res image]

The problem is, the space between the PCI-E x16 slots on that motherboard are very slim. And The 560Ti is a dual slot card. Therefore if I were to get another GTX 560Ti - will it choke, try putting its heat back into the case and end up heating the underside (circuit-board side) of the card below it? Is it even possible?

As far as I can see:
a) Improve airflow drastically
b) Get a motherboard with larger space

Since I can't get a motherboard with drastically bigger space, since they're for socket 1155 and I would need to get a completely new processor.

Help & suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yep, the top card will suffocate and get much hotter than the lower one.

The solution I see for you is --selling the 560Ti and getting something more powerful in a single card. That's your best bet quite honestly.

Strap some 120mm fans on the side of the gpus and you will be golden. Or go watercooling

ouch...that is some, uh, interseting pcie placement. your best option is a dual-gpu card, maybe the new 560x2 from evga?
I had the same problem and what i did was buy an antec spot fan and positioned it to blow directly in between my two cards. It helped alot but my top card still runs a tad hotter than my bottom.

Is there a part out there that actually lets you strap a fan to the 2 cards? Or will I have to improvise to try this?

I used to have the same board with 2x6870s and the spacing is very tight best bet is go for a different board or more powerful card like a 570 or 580.

Ive seen ribbon cables that allow you to remote mount cards from a pci exp. slot dont know where to buy them though

EDIT:

found one cheep

should be able to use this to move the card further down

I've run crossfire setups for years with similar designed motherboards. It's fine to have the two cards that close, just be aware of the temp increase on the top card if you want to overclock.

You don't need any extra fans or anything, they will be fine.

Is water cooling a option? If not then I like what the first poster said, sell your 560 and get a single card. But it might be ok. Do you keep your house cool? What are your case temps? Does your case have the one 120mm fan in the front or does it have 2? I think you might be able to pull it off with getting a extra 120mm fan for the front.

Some one brought this up

I do not know if it viable for a card though or how you would mount it cause you need sli bridge. Maybe if you got 2 of them, if they are any good.
