In Your Opinion what should I look into for my next CPU? i would get AMD

should I look at 6-cores? or just a better quad?
and I dont understand what's the difference between Athlon/Phenom/And Black edition??? confused.gifconfused.gif

Overclock it past 3.5GHz and you'll get better results.

Id also suggesting clocking it up a bit.

The phenomII series gets you l3 cache, among other things.

I would think that at 3.6-3.8 that the Athlon Quad core should be able to keep up with your 6870 in 90% of games.

Try using a gpu monitor and task manager while you run a game. Pay attention to the load on each, that should tell you where the bottleneck is.

Edit: you may consider a 3rd party cooling solution if you do decide to overclock. *Make sure you pay attention to your temps!

You may want to look into a Phenom II x4 830 (same as a Phenom II x4 925) they have them on sale at Micro Center right now for $49.99.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0375737
Even though I have my 830 OC'd to 3.5 GHz, and I had my 840 OC'd to 3.9 GHz. My 830 beats the 840 in every gaming benchmark by a landslide!!!
It's amazing what 6 MB of L3 cache can do. I'm talk'n 5-20 FPS in real world gaming thumb.gif
Of corse since this is an OEM processor it doesn't come with a cooler, just something to consider.
wish you all the luck!

Cheers cheers.gif

sell your phenom II x4 840. buy a Phenom II 955 C3 and a decent air cooler. overclock it to 4ghz and kiss your cpu bottlneck goodbye even with two 6870's
post #7 of 14
The L3 cache helps performance in any real world situation maybe, MAYBE 1% at best. It's not that big of a deal, bad memory implementation.

As for clocking it up, you're not going to see anything ever greater than a 10% increase with a 10% clock up... not sure why people think changing your 3.2Ghz to 3.5Ghz will suddenly make it magically much much faster or something...

I'm not aware of any games that are going to be unplayable because of an 840... whoever said that has some kind of crazy idea about how much CPU power games need. It really comes down to the fact that although GPU usage can scale up with resolutions etc, the CPU doesn't nearly as much. If you have a CPU that's 50% faster than the console CPUs is should be solid for anything you play right now...

I figure my 840 is good for now... although I am concerned seeing as skyrim suggests a 4 core..... I would like to know if my next CPU should be a 6 or 8 core or just a faster better 4 core like a 955,965,975,980,etc,etc.

Your good with it right now smile.gif An 840 and 6870 is a pretty good pair, an overclock on the processor side would free up some cycles, and would benefit games that are CPU-bound.

If you really want to get something faster, grab a 955 (and pray it's a C3), 965, etc. No need to purchase a higher-clocked Quad (970 BE, 980 BE), as you can easily clock to and past that. Be careful with voltage, and have fun getting your chip higher smile.gif
