Upgrade to 6879 or wait for 7xxx

Thread Starter
I'm doing some overtime this weekend and earning myself a nice keep, because of this I'm planning a GPU upgrade BUT should I grab one now or save the money for the 7xxx series?

I know this is thinking quite far down the line but I hate the idea of having this card for a few weeks then a new generation of cards coming out.

Anyone know any rumours of when the 7xxx cards are coming out? And what the price and performance will be.

FYI. I want to get a 2GB version so I'm looking at spending about £160 on the card.

Thanks in advance OCN

Your cpu will be a bottleneck for a 6870. So id say get a 6870 now and snag a x4 or x6 down the road. that way you will have a more balanced system vs a severly bottleneck 7000 series.

My 550 has all 4 cores running at 3.8ghz, so it won't be as much of a bottle neck as a stock 550. I do want to get a x6 phenom II though, or bulldozer II (if amd pull there finger out and do it right)

Well obviously, the longer you wait, the more performance you will get/ per £. Ati Radeon 7xxx Series family codenamed "Southern Islands", is expected to see a Q1 2012 release. With the implementation of PCIE_3.0 the 7xxx Series cards will gain a significant boost in performance. The 7970 will feature 2048 shader cores, a 33% physical increase over 6970. Real world performance increase will be 25%-30%. Also, Intel's Ivy Bridge will be released around a similar time period. Therefore, upon the release of next gen components (Q1 2012) the i7 2600k and the 6970 will be significantly cheaper if you decide to upgrade.

Personally, I recommend you upgrade to the 1100T while you wait for 7xxx Series card to be released and build a new system next year.

Great, nice one Ryan. Very tempted to wait if its actually going to be Q1.

Then again I could get a 6870, continue to upgrade parts and then sell the 6870 for a 7xxx card if I see it necessary. Good plan?

Thats what I'm considering doing now. Just grabbing a 6870 or maybe even a 6950 and selling it when the 7 series cards come out. Still can't decide though, my 4870 is still hanging in there strong.

Ya, you could do that. You could maybe get £60 ($100) out of it when you decide to sell. You'll take a hit to the wallet, but you'll get some use out of it between now and then atleast. In the meantime you can save up for a next gen build. With the XDR2 memory used on the 7xxx series cards, SSD technology becoming cheaper, and Quad channel RAM being used for Ivy Bridge, we're gonna see a nice jump in overall computer performance in the next 6 months.
