Are you sure the new Xeon's are schedule to be released in Jan/Feb 2012? Also, do you have a date on the SR3's release? And does anyone else make those dual processor boards other than EVGA?

Once the SB-E Xeons are released the usual server vendors will sell boards. SuperMicro, ASUS, TYAN, etc. EVGA's dual-socket boards are enthusiast boards instead of server/workstation, so they usually supply more PCI-E slots and overclocking features, and often they're much more expensive than normal server/workstation boards. However you can't overclock on a normal server/workstation board.

Thanks for the info. Are the SB-E Xeon's the new ones slated for release in Jan/Feb? I think kweechy was saying that there's supposed to be some new Xeon's coming out soon after the SB-Es.

Sorry, I was referring to the SB-E Xeons, that's the upcoming release. The SB-E consumer chips come out first though, they're out tomorrow which is what I was meaning when mentioning buying them if you needed a machine right right now.

Yep, I saw all of the new Sandy Bridge-E boards and chips out today at my local Micro Center. They are priced SO much higher than everything else. Is that how Sandy Bridge was when it first came out? Do you think the Sandy Bridge-E components will drop in price soon?

They're priced higher because they're 6-core chips instead of 4-core. Plus they're huge, look at this picture from AnandTech. The one on the far right is LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge, the one on the left is LGA 2011 SB-E. Larger chips mean fewer chips per wafer which means lower yield, meaning they have to charge more to make a profit on them.

399
They're also targeting the enthusiast/workstation market. The target audience is usually willing to pay much more than Joe Schmoe who just wants to do email and facebook. I doubt we'll see any large drops in price anytime soon.

don't you think it would have been better to wait for lga 2011 before committing to anything...

I abandoned my 2nd build so yes, I am waiting to see how things progress in the LGA 2011 market.
