Quality > high numbers for PSUs. That PSU would be fine for single cards if it were a good quality one, although I would leave the CPU at stock settings until you get the new PSU (GPU would be the bottleneck, anyway, no performance gain from OCing a 2500K with any single card). Remember that video cards wont pull 100% load during games, and nowhere near what manufacturer's recommend, as they need to over-recommend as a safety net for bad quality PSUs.

He did state he is getting a better PSU, so this is moot anyway. But state that in the first post next time, OP. You should have known everyone was going to yell at you for not having an 850W PSU.

As far as the card, look around for a good deal on a 570 or 6970, whatever brand you prefer.

Also, did you already buy all those other parts? There are some places where you could save some serious money and transfer it towards the GPU. That RAM is laregely a waste of money over 133/1600MHz RAM. You will see little to no gains as far as gaming on 1155, and it costs twice as much. I hope you have the hard drive already, though...

I thought the Sapphire Dirt-3 editions were all unlocked with the dual bios switch? This is the one I bought:

It says right in the description: "A Dual BIOS feature allows enthusiasts to experiment with alternative BIOS settings and performance"

It's not coming until tomorrow, but are you saying that the Dirt-3 cards are coming locked now, or is it just the non-reference 6950's from various manufactures? If my card is locked, I'm going to be pissed and then return it for an MSI TF3.

Any idea?

The unlock gives you 10% higher power consumption with the same power limits while increasing performance/MHz by 2-3%

Is unlock worth it? Not by any means.

Is unlock worth it? Not by any means.
You forgot the part where it 'unlocks' an extra 120 stream processors. Which is where majority of the performance comes from...which gives more like 10-15% not 2-3% buddy.

Is unlock worth it? Yes, why else would people like them so much.

I take it back, it looks like some of these can be unlocked.

However, based on what I've just read, the dual-bios switch only OCs the card to the higher speeds of the 6970, it does not unlock the shaders. If you want to unlock the shaders, it looks like you need to do a BIOS flash.

Just trying to get more information, but are you positive on that? I was under the impression from several different sources that it's the exact opposite. It should unlock the card, flip the bios to 6970 and unlock the streaming processors to 1536. The card then can be OC'd through Trixx/Afterburner.

No?

Shaders unlocked with the bios switch flip and it is a pretty solid overclocker as well. 970/1370 @ 1.18v stable without artifacts looping Heaven demo for 20 minutes, running Metro2033 benchmark 20 times and 30+ minutes of Battlefield 3. Starts to get slight tearing eventually above 1380 memory and will eventually crash at 980 on the core in Battlefield 3. 3dMark11 benched at 1000mhz, but was slower than 990Mhz.

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2114655 (3 1/2% better score than locked shaders at the same core/memory speeds)

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/eb5wz/
I don't have the time right now, but just a note on performance:

From what I've read here and other places, it seems like the average performance boost is ~3-4% with the unlocked shaders, and about 10-15% overall with an OC, depending on how far you go. I would have to ASSUME that with 880/1350Mhz, it would be roughly 10%? IMO, that's worth having the unlocked (bios switch) card.

But, I won't know for sure until I actually get the card, I certainly don't want to post incorrect information, so please correct me if I am mistaken.

This is one of many guides I saw online that indicated a need to do custom BIOS flashing:

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=350307

Since I don't have one of these cards, I can't say for certain, but that's what I've read. You may very well be right. If so, I think I owe you a drink .

I forgot to add, I'm talking specifically about the Sapphire Radeon 6950 Dirt3 edition card.

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presenta...n=&lid=1&leg=0

I believe you are also correct. I thought I read that other Sapphire models as well as other 6950 cards are known to be locked. If that's the case, you are correct in stating that it would need to be flashed.

Either way, I believe people have posted similar performance with both cards, so I don't really think it's that much of an issue. The reason I chose the Sapphire Dirt3 was because everyone said it was unlocked shaders with the bios switch. Of course I won't know until I get my card, so for me it's all speculation. It's also the main reason I chose the 6950 over an MSI 560 Ti Hawk TF3. That was the other card on my list, but with unlocked shaders and an OC boost, I couldn't ignore the HUGE benefit of the 6950.

I'm just hoping I'm one of the lucky ones that don't have to flash it lol. That's all!
