Is there a better cpu then what I have? M2R32-MVP

Thread Starter
I built this computer long enough ago that it's safe to say I can max it out without worrying that something better will come along. My biggest bottleneck is the CPU. I currently have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Socket AM2 125W [ADX6400CZWOF] in it. I was looking at http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/M2R32-MVP.html but I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough to make the decision on my own so I'm hoping for some advice from you pros. I use my rig for everything but gaming is my passion. I was thinking of getting a Phenom x4, but would that actually be a downgrade seeing as most games (if any?) won't use all of the cores?

I should also mention I know nothing about overclocking. I bought the black edition and then found out I am too chicken**** to actually try.

Is there a reason you are trying to upgrade just the CPU as opposed to saving up for a system-wide upgrade?

I'm not very good at saving money, and I don't make a lot of it.

That's a good reason

However, you really don't have any room to upgrade. A Phenom, at best, is a side-grade, since you gain the multi-cores, but you lose clock-speed and gain lots of heat. Modern games do do a good job of using multi-cores, but I'm not sure you'd really benefit.

As far as I see, the best upgrade you could do is a GPU upgrade.

If you do go with a new system, know that you'd "only" have to upgrade the CPU/Mobo/Memory. Everything else looks great. A combo like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...t=Combo.719050

And then sell the hard drive.

Not much to upgrade to from AM2+ (I assume according to your board). It's a nice board, and you would benefit from a Phenom, but it's a hard platform to stick to. Could you grab a cheap AM3 and an Athlon II X4?

There are also boards that support AM3/AM2+/AM2 that will take DDR2 and DDR3 for around $50 on Newegg

Gah, don't tell me that! I just bid on a second one for crossfire.

That is a crazy good combo imo, I'd even keep the HD for storage. Looks like I'm going to have to starve myself for the next few weeks now. lol

Thank you both for the replies!

Happy to help!

If you need anything else, just ask.

Since you offered. Do you know if overclocking has the potential to damage anything besides my cpu? I figure I can attempt to teach myself how with my old hardware when I get the new stuff.

You have the possibility of damaging the CPU, mobo, and RAM, primarily, though I guess in theory you could damage other things (I'm just not sure how, and I can't say I've ever heard of it happening).

The biggest concern would be over-drawing your PSU, but since you have an 800watt PSU, that won't be a problem.

Nice, so nothing I won't be replacing anyway. Thanks again!
