Are you just saying that because it sounds good in your head? You certainly didn't back it up with anything.

The hardware/bios is choosing a voltage within spec that works without problems (apparently). That also allows it to lower the voltage when the clock drops (EIST and whatnot).

normal == stock == auto


Look at my sig: I'm running @ stock (aka auto) volts, it seems to like 1.216-1.224v (@3.0 @ full tilt folding)
i am running 1.4v something on 3.00..that is why i want to keep it low

31C @ full load seems pretty good to me.

Intel specs 1.45v max for 45nm, IIRC. 1.4 does seem high as a requirement to hit 3.0, but if you can hold the temps down, why not? Perhaps your board isn't the best 45nm quad OCer? I've not researched it, so I'm grasping at that straw.

How fast can you get it to run at 1.4V? is 3.0 as fast as it goes?

i didn't even test it out as it is at 1.4v. well..i think i will stay with my good 2.8

Auto is not equal to stock or normal. Auto is only equal to stock or normal when you are running the CPU at factory settings. When you overclock, the motherboard adds voltage to the CPU so it's stable. Sometimes it unnecessarily adds voltage because it's doing it based on predefined values and doesn't take into account if the chip is good or not so good. Depending on the actual overclock, you may get lower voltages by fine tuning them yourself.

To the OP: what are the options in the Bios ? The photo you took doesn't show what the options are for CPU voltage.

You're basically saying if you touch anything in the bios you're not stock/normal. Well sure. But then why use the term in the first place?
You could look at it that way, but if you're within the VID that it is using, that's design operating conditions, aka "stock" - once you manually set voltage, the voltage will no longer drop at idle, which is most certainly NOT stock.

Manually setting a "stock" voltage is 100% not the way intel intended the chip to be operated, and is therefore anything but stock.


Unless you know that at any temperature within recommended limits is stable at x voltage, the VID table voltage is not necessarily too much. What if it's 95F ambient in the room today? I know mine on auto has no stability issues from 32F to 95F ambient - who's to say that would be the case if I manually put in a slightly lower voltage?

Unless your motherboard has it's own tables for voltage, it should not be exceeding VID on it's own on auto.
