What's going on here?

Thread Starter
Can anybody explain what's going on here? After a few minutes of BF3 on seemingly any map, I start getting these crazy fps dips. They're actually more like freezes, and they line up with where the GPU usage drops to 0. I hate to jump to conclusions and add fuel to the VRAM fire, but I feel like it's my VRAM capping out. I just recently tried playing with AA on, and that's when the problem started. Screenshot is while playing w/ all Ultra + 4x AA @ 1920 x 1200. I originally thought it my be OCP kicking in, so I reset clocks, but it didn't help.

Don't know whats going on with your card, but with my 470's (same amount of vram) everything is perfectly fine with AA maxed @ 2560 x 1600 Seems like something else is going on.

Hmm. Using the same drivers (285.62)?

I can also disqualify the notion of VRAM limitation.

My GTX570s run BF3 at Ultra with 4xMSAA at 1920x1200 with 285.62 without any problem. My friend's single GTX570 also runs at exactly the same setting and driver with no problem as well.

To diagnose, I suggest you turning off AA to see if the problem goes away.

And, can you elaborate more about the problem? The fps dip/freeze is obviously the result of the drop of usage of the GPU. So, what happens next? When it becomes unplayable, did you try to exit the game and then re-launch it immediately?

Problem does go away if I turn off AA. If I set to 2x, it happens, just not as frequenty. As far as exiting the game...if I exit, I can enter another game and play fine for about 5 minutes, then the problem slowly re-introduces itself.

Some more misc info:
  • Card has never had the voltage cap turned off. It's been underwater it's whole life and never seen anything over 45 degrees. I've never seen it do this with any other games, but I don't know that I've played anything that puts the same stress on it either.
  • 3D settings in control panel are set to "Let Application Decide"
  • Doesn't seem to be triggered by any certain event in game.
  • The game will usually freeze for a second or two, then pick right back up, or it will refresh, skip another time or two, then pick back up.

I won't have time to mess around too much with it tonight, but a few things I'm going to try:
  • Perform a sweep/clean driver install. Will try a roll back too.
  • Turn down CPU OC
  • Reset pcie frequency to 100. It is currently set to 105 since this board hardly lets me oc my GPU at stock freq.
  • Play around with all the settings, not just AA to see get a better idea of what is causing it

4GB of ram is cutting it rather close. Maybe your memory is having issues? I'm just taking random stabs. For such a good system, you should consider increasing that memory to atleast 8GB BF 3 can chew through 3GB with realitive ease. And your trying to run ultra so add that to the pot and you might just be hitting the outer limits of your systems memory.

Yeah BF3 is the first game that's made me consider upping to 8GB. Is this the type of bottleneck I would see with maxed out memory, though? And would AA be using any more memory than no-AA? I can try slimming down my processes next time I run it to see if that helps.

Same result with slimmed down processes and about .75GB memory left, so doesn't seem like that's the issue. Will try all things mentioned earlier tomorrow.

What's the speed of the memory? Maybe it's not able to clear out the info between maps, and your getting a bottleneck? Even if memory is not the issue .75gb of memory on reservse is a bit...low. A 8Gb kit would do you wonders.

What's the status of your CPU during BF3? I'm not very up to date with intel I5's a 4.0Ghz should be fine. Just trying to get a better grasp.

I'm having trouble remembering the name of this option in-game. But do you have the post processing or something like that enabled? It should be like 4-6th from the bottom near the AA settings. Try changing that setting. When I get back home, I'll post a few other tweaks. Maybe something will help. Just can't remember off the top of my head.

Memory is at 1600 with timings of 7-8-7-24. I highly doubt the memory speed is the issue. No doubt I could use a little more, but I don't think total available memory is a problem either. CPU usage in game looks alright. It's at about 65% when I'm fullscreened. One core looks to be at about 90%, but it's never maxing out. Also, if I remember correctly, the spikes don't translate to CPU load at all. I'll confirm that tomorrow when I'm trying all that other stuff.
