..Just disagree. ME2 biotics have much more impact, and you can still combine them.
Agree to disagree I guess. You couldn't combine them as easily, especially with the lower durations and cooldown across the entire skill set.

Quote:
Both ways have their perks. Don't act like ME2's system is some strange broken concept; every other shooter uses it.
I've never seen a shooter where the ammo management was so broken. In fact I don't think I've ever seen a shooter where there are breaks in action that don't let you restock, or give you a full stock when reentering missions. If you know of one, let me know. In most shooters, either you can buy ammo, or enough enemies dropped them. This felt like it was rushed and not tested for drop rate verses usage balance. Combined with the less effective biotics, I had to use weapons a lot more in ME2 as a pure biotic, which put me off.

Quote:
Skillwise, I agree I wish it was more complex. That said, the ending talents in ME2 were awesome touches to personalizing characters. Honestly, in ME1, if you leveled high enough, you still took almost all the talents, barring a weapon or ability. It was hardly "customization".
Considering that it took 2 play through to get to max level, I consider it customization based on how much you wanted to play. But I guess I do see your point there. I guess I'd rather have more abilities for my character than for my team mates, who where usually useless to me anyways.

Quote:
Don't know where you got your info, but from the beginning it was supposed to be equal parts RPG and shooter. RPG story and choices, shooter combat.
Fine, I guess I just took it as an RPG company making an RPG, which they used to be good at and now aren't (DAII ).

Quote:
Fair enough, still can't fathom, purely from playing both. I played ME1's in spite of it's gameplay, and until this thread I had yet to see anyone who actually liked it. I'd say I'm not in the minority, seeing the general public's responses to ME2.
I know I'm the minority, I'm just letting you see my point of view since you couldn't fathom it. But jsut because the majority likes it, doesn't make it good (MW series case in point <-- also my opinion). ME1 currently is my most favorite and played game (500+ hours)

Well, I never encountered an area where I actually ran out of ammo, but for the rest I can kind of see your point. The difference with MW, though, is that ME2 didn't only get stellar critic reviews and sell a lot, it got almost universally high ratings on the user-reviews side too, which is pretty rare.
I'll be the first to admit that ME2 wasn't perfect. While I loved the new character progression, I feel the overall Collector story was a bit too low-key considering the whole galactic-extermination tone of ME1. I just don't agree with the seemingly common consensus on OCN that ME2 was a "failure". DAII gave me reservations for sure, but I still have enough faith in Bioware thanks to their older titles to hold massive hype for ME3.

But yeah.. I digress.

I love ME. Not going to read. Going to wait to play the game. Must resist! At least I have BF3 to help keep me away

Im fairly sure we can all reach some conclusion of what MIGHT happen (i.e. Shepard wins, reapers loose), but thats all I want to know. I loved ME1, thought ME2 was pretty lame, but Im still not going to spoil ME3.

Its a shooter at its core.

Why people expect it to be gripping is beyond my comprehension. Very few shooters hold my interest long enough to finish them.

1. Cover based combat: ME1 had a better run and gun style. 30-40+ (depending on skills and stuff) you could take down an colossus by yourself without hidding/cover. ME2, had to hide the entire game.

2. Biotics: ME1, instant hit, more power, felt like it did something. ME2, bland sense of impact, stupid 'homing' thing (aka didn't hit always hit). ME1, with a fully max lift and push, you should lift an enemy and push them into the air for quite a distance. ME2, the enemy barely moved with hit with biotics. ME2, bland sense of impact, stupid 'homing' thing (aka didn't hit always hit)

3. Ammo: ME1, unlimited ammo, limited by heat. With enough upgrades heat wasn't an issue and you could waste everything in your way. ME2, limited ammo, had to find the stupid clips when enemies dropped them, couldn't buy them vendors for some stupid reason, more of a just getting by feel, aka you need to kill everyone so that you can get their ammo so you can later kill everyone so you can get their ammo, and so on and so forth.

6. Skills: ME1, nicely laid out skill tree with plenty of choice. ME2, very minimalism, felt like it was dumbed down for causal players who aren't used to complex RPGs. I feel like the ME universe was supposed to be an RPG, NOT a shooter.

This is all my opinion, but this is how I comprehend that ME1 was so much better than ME2.
I'd have to agree with you. ME1 was entirely way better than ME2. While sure ME2 had it's good points, overall it was rather lackluster in comparison to the first one.

You must not have been around long. When there was a GOTY poll, ME was well up there in the rankings.
You must also not read or see the metacritic reviews. I'd say that a huge majority really liked the game.

Very nice, I think I have somewhere along the lines of 350 in to it. And no matter how hard I tried, I was able to get through like 5 complete playthroughs in ME2 in under 150 hours. Whereas with ME1, my first playthrough, where I literally explored every nook and cranny took up ~130 hours.

ME2 was a huge failure comparatively to ME1. That is the general consensus of OCN (at least that's what I derived from it and agree). While sure ME1 was not perfect, the inventory system was pretty bad, however, in ME1 you could literally go anywhere and do almost anything. ME2 you couldn't even walk around on the citadel, well except for some floors and generally, a small area. ME1 didn't have that lame planet scanning thing (tedious), or the stupid ammo clips. Why would gun tech all of the sudden go backwards?
It just seems like ME2 is way too scripted and doesn't give the player nearly as much freedom as ME1 did. It went from being FO3ish, semi role playing, to more like BFBC2 single player where it's all scripted. Well maybe not that bad, but still, quite a bit worse.

Anyway, I think it's pretty obvious what the outcome's may be. Win, lose, borg.

ME1 was really up there in my favorites right next to KOTOR1. ME2 was entertaining but was very "Dumbed Down" I don't like my games super complicated, but I like a decent amount of complexity in RPG's, if your going to spend 100+ hours playing a game your going to learn everything eventually, I really feel ME2 was geared towards the mindless FPS croud. I let my friend barrow ME1 and he gave up playing the game after 1 hour because "there was nothing to shoot"

ME1- Deep space exploration RPG with 3rd person shooting mechanics/

ME2- linear 3rd person shooter with RPG elements,

ME3- halo turned into a 3rd person shoot with Mass Effect Skins.
