[TPU] AMOLED Technology Finally Poised For The Big Time?

The current display technology standard for most PCs and TVs is LCD nowadays. However, LCD technology has significant and well known drawbacks, such as limited viewing angles, poor colours, motion blur and input lag. These problems cause some people to swear by and hold on to the old and now obsolete CRT monitors, as it had none of these problems (it did however, have lots of others). There are various types of LCD technology in mainstream use today which attempt to address these shortcomings, but none fix them all. For example, TN displays are cheap to buy, relatively fast which reduces motion smear and input lag, but at the expense of viewing angle and colour accuracy, making them suitable for fast gaming and animation. Meanwhile, IPS displays have the opposite characteristics, making them suitable for professional photographic work, where accurate colours and vibrant pictures are essential.

Interesting that technology took a step back in order to become less cumbersome and is now just starting to catch up to what we had a decade ago.

Even with LCD's shortcomings I prefer it over CRT considerably.

I like the size of an LCD as I have a little glass shelf I installed onto my wall for my monitor just over my desk which would not be possible with a CRT. Though I think of how I used to run whatever resolution I wanted, how much nicer the colours were and the fact that vsync didn't have to be used in most games and I think that we have been putting up with a lot since LCDs took over for not much of a gain imo.

This IPS panel I recently got is helping though, but it is still 60hz which annoys me. Would like to get a reasonably priced 120hz IPS panel so I don't need vsync which is out of the question, lol.

I don't really look at a low viewing angle as much of a draw back. Might be bad on TVs...though my LCD TV is pretty good in the viewing angle department...but on a PC you are staring straight at it and unless you have 30 people that need to see your screen any one who you want to see the screen can easily do so. Plus, thought better colors was a pro for LCDs?

It all comes down to real estate. if a CRT could take up a little space as my LCD does I would use one. If they can shrink it down enough it might come back

Ya I miss CRT's colour and cleaner refresh rate/motion. But with OLED and 120Hz flatpanels coming out now/soon, I think we'll be right back where we were, except without the 40 pound boat anchor monitors that take up an entire desk haha.

Yeah, that is what is nice to hear about in this article although it got me thinking about how long it has taken to get back to where we were just in a smaller format.

Kind of crazy if you think about it.

That's been one of my biggest peeves about CRT's...they were sooo big and took up a large portion of a desk and were like 50lbs. LED/LCD screen these days are a mere inch or two thick and are like ~5lbs

It's not quite like you have to hold them to use them. This is irrelevant, except for the rare occasion you move your monitor. And if 50 pounds is that big of a deal, you should probably get some exercise.

My old CRT warped my computer desk after a few years lol and the desk was solid wood now it wasn't the greatest desk so the build quality probably wasn't the greatest. Made me laugh when I finally had to toss the thing

The form factor of LCD/LED is so much better than CRT that CRT will NEVER be coming back....
