Water Cooling if NOT OC'ing

Thread Starter
So I don't plan on overclocking my computer, but I was thinking about upgrading the CPU cooler with a water cooler, because honestly, I think they look cooler. Just curious if this is a bad idea? could I potentially decrease performance by getting my CPU too cold? or is this pretty much just overkill (like riding a full suspension mountain bike through a playground).

It may be overkill but there's nothing wrong with lower temps. You could go with something like one of the corsair H series hybrid coolers or a xspc rasa kit for fairly cheap. I do agree though watercooling looks way cooler then a massive heatsink.

the colder the better but yes that is overkill if you don't OC but if you have the money why not

If you got the cash go for it, nothing wrong with better temps and a possibly quieter setup.

It's never a bad thing to use watercooling in your rig! and it's not overkill..... well it might be a smidge if you don't plan on OC'ing but I have to agree that it just plain looks cool and works great. You can't get it too cold with watercooling so don't worry about that. Leaks are your worst fear but if done properly, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. There are TONS of ideas and lots of tutorials in the watercooling thread. Start there for some ideas.

You got a sweet rig that would look even better with w/c. I run the same i7 960 in my backup gaming rig and I have mine running at an easy 4.0ghz at only 1.2875 Vcore. I have a XSPC Rasa RS240 kit coming that should allow me to push the OC even higher. You have the rig to do it if you ever do decide to OC.

You'll never decrease performance by cooling a CPU too much (see overclocking results with liquid nitrogen or helium).

The Corsair H series has probably been the most reviewed, so it's probably a safe bet to go with any of their coolers.

DO IT, ran your fans very low and you got yourself a VERY quiet gaming computer. That's one of the main benefits of WCing, (edit) but why not overclock? You're missing out on anywhere to up to 15-30% free performance with hardly any risks if done right. I can't see how performance becoming decreased is possible with lower temperature.

it will look cool, if that is what you are going for, and it can be quieter by a large margin.

just keep it simple IMO. i wouldnt waste money on a res, just a pump, block, rad, and tubes. i wouldnt even get compression fittings. they are expensive as hell. just hide a T line behind the hard drive cage or something.
