Ridiculous Build

Thread Starter
Ok here's the story. I've been working doing 3D development for a while now and in a few weeks my first big job is about to pay off. I'm a student so I don't have many expenses. College is paid for by scholarships and I have no student loans or any other real financial burden. So I'm going to have about $3-5K to play around with. Life with few responsibilities is nice.

So... what sort of ridiculous thing would you build if you had say $2.5K?

For reference my computer is mostly a workstation but I do love gaming still and Skyrim is at the top of my list. Then beyond that this current rig will probably go to my brother or one of my friends so I'm not really planning on using any old parts except perhaps the monitor.

Off the top of head i can think of dual gtx 580s, i7 2700k, some high end asus ROG motherboard, h100, 1tb hdd, and a corsair 800d, and the ax 1200 and maybe 12 gigs of ram?

Definitely ^this! I'd recommend a nice big SSD as well, it'll help loading applications you use in 3D development. And maybe if you wanna go all-out add watercooling.

WAIT! Do not buy anything yet.

if you have that much money to toss around consider this. LGA2011 and Sandybridge E hits in a few days. Why buy a 2700k rig when you can get some really extreme performance?

really, where are you going to find 12 gigs of ram in a 4 stick or 2 stick configuration with an i7 2700k mainboard? Um, no.

you would go 8 or 16 or 32 gigs of ram.

Wait for Sandybridge-E,

Its about to be announced and put up for sale everywhere

I would recommend a GTX590 if you can afford it. As far as I'm aware most 3d modeling packages don't support SLI (Maya, 3ds Max...). So if you're looking for something that will be able to push a lot of polys both in-game and in development software you would probably be better off with a single card solution.

If you are buying now go for my 2700k rig but substitute the 3 EVGA 580s for the 2 x MSI Lightning Extreme 3GB.

IIRC a 590 is still an SLi GPU.
