Run internal HDD from external eSATA?

Thread Starter
I have a Rampage III Formula and I have used up all the internal SATA ports. My Steam Drive a 1tb Samsung f4 and my Blu-ray drive are on the Marvell ports and they just don't like it. Samsung is loud because AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management) is not supported on the Marvell chipset, I get poor performance ,and the Blu-ray drive will lock up sometimes. I wanted to know a few things about the topics question.

1. Are those ports on the Intel controller?
2. Do I need a different connector for eSATA and Powered eSATA?
3. Disadvantages using the external ports?
4. This work?

I believe your external SATA ports use a JMicron JMB363 controller.

I think your correct. Would the JMB363 outperform the Marvell 9128? I can't find any good benchmarks.

I doubt it, since Marvell 9128 is SATA3, but using SATA2 drives, it shouldn't matter.

Well, maybe, maybe not.. I bought a Highpoint Rocket 620WDA card (ok, I got it free) for my SSD, and haven't had any issues at all with the latest two SSD firmware revisions.. However, I wouldn't know how it performs with an optical drive, but I'm quite certain it works just fine for SSD and HDD.. although mine doesn't have the SSD Caching ability that the SB Marvell chipset has, it's still pretty decent performance.

I run data(2x Hitachi Deskstar 1TB) and BD burner over my eSATA which is also a JMicron controller. I get very similar speeds to my internal drives on the Intel SATA3 controller. HDDs don't come close to saturating the link anyway tongue.gif
