1080p. whats your gpu?

It was playing ok at some maps on low but at others after couple of minutes it got really low fps suddenly, almost to the point of slideshow...

i5 2500k + P67 motherboard should be fairly cheap, and a good upgrade.

EDIT: I just realised you said you wanted to play it at low. I'm assuming you can't already play it at low? I would have thought that system would have gotten you good FPS at low already.
yeah it's bit laggy even at low, see previous reply

lol I even put it in my post. Anyway it's a 5850.

As for the dips. Are you playing on 64 person server? If so those are a complete waste of time atm and 32 players is MUCH more fun.

Also look into other causes like HDD failure or maybe it just needs a de-fragment.

What PSU is it on? If it can't supply enough player that could explain it.

I dont think you have to go as far as HDD and PSU...

Prolly a CPU upgrade would be most beneficial. It may or may not require MoBo, depends on how far you wanna go. The GTX 460 wont be max settings, but it should do for low, or even medium.

My buddy has E8400 @ 3.2GHz and a single 4850 and we play together every chance we get. His CPU is pegged at 100% meaning the 4850 isn't working as hard as it could, so a GTX 460 won't help that much other than being DX11 'pretty'. But it's playable and though he's looking to upgrade soon, he's enjoying it the way it is in the meantime by playing the heck outta it.

On the flip side, I have a GTX 460 and a Quad core @ 3.3GHz (so roughly double his E8400 OC) and I run about 75% CPU in BF3. Which roughly means you'll need 50% more CPU to remove that as being your bottleneck before worrying about a GPU upgrade. The CPU will be long maxed out before the GTX 460 will.

I had an E8500 (OC'd to 3.53ghz), 4GB DDR2 and an 1GB EVGA Superclocked 560 GTX prior to this build, and I could play BF3 at all Mediums w/o any issues what so ever in MP @ 1680x1050 res. I haven't played the SP campaign, yet.

So you should probably be okay. Maybe just OC the processor a bit as a stop gap for now.

So I want to make BF3 playable on this PC. Even if its at low settings.

Question, what would be a bottleneck in this system, i.e. what part should I replace 1st.

I can't OC the CPU on the current motherboard, I can OC the GPU tho. Not sure that it would change much in case of a 460 tho lol.
I'm sure you've heard this said at least once, but I am getting the impression that you shouldn't have a problem running BF3 at low settings with this setup. I use a single 460 GTX and an Phenom II 720 BE on my backup computer and it ran BF3 fine on medium. FYI I also had 4 gigs of ram, 1600 MHz. But if you MUST upgrade, I concur with the guys who said CPU and motherboard. If you pick a good motherboard, it also allows you the option to upgrade later, perhaps to SLI 460 GTX, which will only run you about $150 more and nab you similar if not better performance than a single 570 GTX. Put it this way, I run 1920x1080 on high no aa, and its smooth only slowing down in the middle of mass bombing carnage. Nothing is overclocked.

Pick up a cheap Q6600 or another 775 quad if money is tight, and youll be fine

My friend and I drove up to Microcenter in the Bay Area and got an i5 2500k with the Asus p8p67 pro mother board for $300 USD. If you can find a similar deal in Australia that would be my recommendation.

Your current gpu should be fine for low quality but if you can get a deal on a gtx570 of hd6970 shoot for that. If you're on a budget, perhaps a 6950 or 560ti or even something from the 6800 line.
