-------------------------------

So I took apart my new hp g6 laptop tonight. I replaced the crappy stock thermal paste and decreased temps by about 5C under load on my llano APU. It'll give me a little bit of headroom as far as OCing goes.

I decided to take a few pictures for you guys.

Enjoy the pr0nz....

More pics at my blog. Link is at the top.

I thought this was pretty cool considering it's not often we see a laptop chip like this, let alone the new APU's. Nice to know this laptop is upgradable too. Too bad the cooling system sucks . Next up will be some sort of cooler or fan mod. Don't know yet.

Update. Replacing the thermal paste did wonders.

When folding I run 2.3GHz @ 1.125Vcore. For games I run at 2.7GHz @ 1.200Vcore.

Temps while folding at the above settings are around 77-79C depending on the work unit. (As opposed to 85-87C before the new thermal paste)
Gaming at 2.7GHz is about close to the same. Sometimes going to 85C. (before it could go as high as 90)

85C seems like a lot, but the general consensus with these laptop apu's is to keep the temps under 85C full load. AMD stresses these laptop chips+sockets at 115C for 500 hours. 115 is the TJ max for the processor, so going to 85C doesn't bother me.

How are you able to oc it? Does the bios allow you to mess with the FSB?

Got another question for you...How are the A series for gaming?...I'm really eyeing the E450 for a netbook but I'm not sure if it will perform better than my ion netbook I currently have. To be honest I just want something that can play TF2, League of Legends, and SC2 at 30FPS. But I think I may have to get a Nvidia 540 for it =\\.

It's a mobile chip so it already came with no IHS. Direct die heat dissipation.

I use k10stat to edit the p-states. There are also a few other programs that can do this.

On my laptop, I have yet to find a way to OC the 6520G on board. This is a little bit trickier with the mobile platform, especially with a locked OEM BIOS.

The A6-3400M/6520G does wonderfully with Starcraft 2 mostly on all medium (maybe some low) settings. Source games are pretty good too. I was able to have half settings medium and half settings high with slight AA on Left 4 Dead 2.

Games like BF:BC2 I have to run just about everything low to get playable frame rates. COD4 runs pretty decently with only a few IQ sacrifices.

I would imagine on the E450 or E350 SC2 and TF2 would be playable at 30+FPS , but with many sacrifices in image quality. But it is still miles ahead of the Nvidia Ion.

The GT540 is very powerful. It will do very well in most games.

OCing the gpu portion I think would cause some serious instability in a laptop environment, I suppose you could do one or the other but not both.

I wish I could find some solid reviews of the E450. I REALLY want a netbook 11.6" that performs at 30fps with some of the titles I mentioned, but I'm just not willing to pay 1000 for the alienware =\\. I love my 1201N size. I have given up on AMD for CPU support but am cheering them on for their APUs. Hopefully they will SHINE next year even more than they have currently with their APUs. I hear rumors though that Intel is seeing them as a threat for their mobile market and is seriously overhauling their IGP.

Yeah well especially not in my laptop. The cooling cannot take it at all.

The APU's are great for the average user:

1) The average joe doesn't really notice the processing power of the CPU cores during real world performance (unless using heavy rendering, encoding, or multithreading apps). Most people will be using netbooks/laptops for word processing, internet, media consumption and games anyways.

2) It brings affordable gaming capability on a mobile platform. I know way too many people that buy laptops with intel HD integrated graphics and ask me why their games run slow.

3) It's pretty energy efficient to have everything on one die (granted you don't overclock like I do).

4) The whole platform is bloody cheap. I got my HP g6 for $420 CAD after taxes. That is with the A6-3400m, 6GB of ram, 750GB hard drive etc

If intel can mimic this, all the power to them. Then we could have a fast cpu and gpu on one die. I looking forward to seeing this competition develop in the mobile market.
