SSD optimization - RAM disk?

Thread Starter
Intrigued by the suggestion of setting up a RAM disk in Sean's SSD thread, I set up a small 256mb RAM disk for IE temp files (which were previously on my HDD) and it worked very well, it seemed faster and certainly quieter!

I'm now toying with the idea of getting some more RAM and moving all my Windows / app temp files there.

What would be the ideal size RAM disk to do this?

(PS Mods if this is the wrong place please move).

1TB...jk lol

I have a 2GB one set up myself. I want a 6-8GB one though. I need more RAM I do a lot of editing in Photoshop Lightroom and it helps a lot.

There really isn't an ideal size, usually the more the better. 1-2GB would be fine.

Hi Sean,

Basically I just want to change the tmp path environment variables and be done with it (currently on HDD).

So if I get another 4gb just for the RAM disk that should do it?

Most likely, I would just watch it weekly and clean the files on it

I'm actually thinking of about making a 256Mb ram disk for firefox cache, seems like it might actually be totally worth it.

What's the point of setting up a RAM drive when the price/space ratio for getting a larger ssd is much better than the price/space ratio for memory?

Well a RamDisk speed can be in the 4000 seq/read speed range, where as SSD's are around 300-600ish. At least from what I can tell thats what it looks like.

Is there any RAMdisk software more robust than Dataram? All working fine yesterday, multiple reboots, everything hunky dory. Today I boot up and the RAMdisk shows up ok and is working, but I couldn't get the Dataram software to start, something about '481 error invalid picture'. Doesn't inspire much confidence in the software!

There are some windows certified stuff but it costs $, besides...it is ment for temp data anyways.

i would never trust data to be saved properly this way
