4.4GHz vs 4.5GHz

Thread Starter
Today I gave OC'ing my i5 another go after somehow understanding how does DVID work. At first I tried x45 @ 1.30v, but I got a BSOD after 50 minutes of Prime95 stress testing. So I tried 1.34v but got the same result. I even tried raising QPI/VTT from 1.050v (default) to 1.12v but it didn't help. Then I decided to lower the multi to x44 @ 1.32v and Prime95 has been running fine for a whole hour. EIST, C1E etc. are all disabled.

I might be able to pull 4.5GHz if I try 1.36v, but is there a noticeable improvement in performance compared to 4.4GHz?

No, you would most likely not notice any difference at all.

What BSOD code did you get. That tells us more of whats happening. Your running 4gig sticks of ram. Your Qpi/Vtt should be around 1.150-1.175v. Also, did you enable Internal Pll Overvolt in the bios? That my keep you back some.

He shouldn't need Internal PLL Overvolt until ~4.8ghz

Think it was 024. Maybe it was a QPI/VTT voltage problem all along...? And yes, I enabled PLL Overvoltage.

EDIT: Sorry, you did say 4GB sticks.

What he was saying was you really don't need PLL Overvoltage for that OC but whatever. What matters is that you get it stable without frying itself first.

It's not worth the voltage increase from 4.4Ghz to 4.5Ghz. Keep your fingers crossed that prime95 passes 8+hrs well. If so, you're all set

I would set my Qpi/Vtt to 1.175v and work off of that. Set Vcore to 1.375v and see what you can get with that. Air cooling should be fine. All the SB systems I've done, I start with that Vcore and see where I get. Most systems can get 4.7-4.8ghz on that voltage. My 2500k needs 1.392v for 5ghz. You need to have all settings correct to get a good overclock.

It seems like I can only go with increments of 20 in the QPI/VTT. So I guess I'll try 1.160v. I disabled PLL Overvoltage as well.
