Intel upgrade advice

Thread Starter
I'm looking at a system upgrade, I'll only be upgrading CPU, Mobo and RAM assuming my current PSU will hold up (will it?).

Main usage is gaming (BF3), I understand that I don't really need Hyperthreading as I don't do any 3D modeling/rendering or movie encoding.

I've been out of the loop regarding anything since the Core2Duo/Quad days I assume my best option is an i5 2500k? I have no idea which chipset I should be looking at or which RAM other than DDR3 .

I'd like some suggestions for CPU, Mobo and RAM with a £400 budget, slightly flexible.

I've been looking at the Scan bundles and for £400.27 I can get:

Asus P8Z68-V
i5 2500k 3.3GHz
8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 XMS3 1600MHz
Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro BK106 Cooler

Is that a good combination? Is there anything I should look at swapping out?

That's a great CPU and mobo. I'm not sure about the cooler, but if it comes with combo deal then might as well get it. Looks good to me. That PSU is fine as well.

i5 2500k 3.3GHz would be the thing, but I hate promoting hardware seeing a replacement ~3 months from now...

...especially since you seem to hold on to your hardware.

Are you looking at the pre-overclocked bundles? If not take a look at those mate. Although your existing selection is solid imho.

I'd rather suggest you spend the money on a new GPU, although the Q6600 might hold you back a little, you'd see a much bigger boost with the GPU than with the CPU upgrade (£/fps anyway)

I'd recommend the GTX 570.

FWIW, that doesn't look too bad. But you're not saving much I don't think, try looking on Aria and Ebuyer as well for individual prices. The components themselves are pretty good. As I said though, I'd recommend a GPU first.

After looking again, I can get the CPU/RAM/Mobo for £355 without the cooler, I can then buy any cooler I like I'm glad my PSU is up to it!

I don't intentionally, I've had no reason to upgrade until now. I think my Mobo is starting to fail, I've been having random shutdowns and I suspect the mobo is at fault, this is a good excuse to upgrade. I'll take a look at the link.

I did have a quick look, I'll re-visit it when I get home from work and have a little more time, thanks

As above, I think my 5/6 year old motherboard is going to bite the dust any day now, I might as well upgrade to a current platform instead of buying a replacement socket 775 motherboard. I'll certainly be upgrading my GPU after the New Year but I think it can keep me going for a few months more, it runs BF3 which is all I care about at the moment

What is the top dog when it comes to air cooling now? Last time I bought a cooler, the Tuniq Tower was king but I very much doubt that is the case any longer!
