The success of the project to create a 're-programmable cell' could revolutionise synthetic biology and would pave the way for scientists to create completely new and useful forms of life using a relatively hassle-free approach.
Quote:
We are talking about a highly ambitious goal leading to a fundamental breakthrough that will, -- ultimately, allow us to rapidly prototype, implement and deploy living entities that are completely new and do not appear in nature, adapting them so they perform new useful functions."

So, implications that this could be a revolutionary breakthrough, OR bring upon a perfect life form to destroy Humanity as we know it.

You never know..

Just remember that they will make a weapon with it first...so lets see if we get a new aids virus that mutates us into STALKER monsters. It always seems to end badly when you try to play God and "create" life that can't exist in nature.

Was just watching a video that was posted yesterday. I suggest anyone with an interest in the creation of synthetic life watch it. The video details the behavior of synthetically created "proto-cells" which behave very much like life-forms only they have been created in a lab. The video starts on the interesting parts.

Yes, insulin producing bacteria are bad. So is round-up-ready crops that feed a hungry world. Not to mention the hundreds of scientific breakthroughs that were discovered by making knockout mutants and tagged proteins. All of that is obviously bad. evil bad evil.

/s Remember only the sith deal in absolutes :-p

I will agree that the labradoodle is probably an example of things ending badly...
