Crucial M4 or not? - Page 2

Another +1. M4 has proven to be solid and reliable. I too avoided the SandForces due to the firmware error, and luckily I can say Crucial has a sweet drive. Planning to buy another one solely for game installs.

DOO EEET!

OK technically it does, but it's implemented so poorly, that it's not a very viable alternative to TRIM. You really do not want to use the M4 in an environment w/o TRIM

See anand's review
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4253/t...0-ssd-review/2
Quote:
Without TRIM the m4 can degrade to a very, very low performance state. Windows 7's Resource Monitor even reported instantaneous write speeds as low as 2MB/s. The good news is the performance curve trends upward: the m4 is trying to clean up its performance. Write sequentially to the drive and its performance should start to recover. The bad news is that Crucial appears to be putting off this garbage collection work a bit too late.

Just ordered Crucial M4 256GB

Dunno what i will do with the Vertex's tho. Will figure something out

People should check the OCZ Forums, when you do that it instantly stops you from getting an OCZ SSD :>

Have you tried secure erasing them and flashing to the newest firmware?

The NAND on these things can't possibly be dying yet. I think it may be firmware screwing up. Some bug in the code that eventually starts "garbage collecting" your data. I haven't seen Indilinx SSDs on FW 1.6 last more than a year.

+1 for the M4.

+1 for the M4.
I bought my first Vertex somewhere in October 2009. A couple of months ago i bought a second one and made a RAID0 with them. Both Drives ran 1.6 and the 2009 one had been on 1.6 ever since that firmware came out. So a couple of weeks/months ago my PC start to shutdown (Like you flick the switch) like every 10-14 days. Been trying to figure out the issue since then.

So a couple of weeks ago the oldest SSD wasn't detected anymore by the BIOS. In the end i "fixed" it with a Destructive Flash. But the issue still happend even with the Drives not in RAID0. Recently i flashed them to 1.7 but the issue still happend.

So today it shutdown again and i went to check the Windows Log again as the previous shutdown where it showed ZERO warning or errors before or after the shutdown.

But today i noticed Disk Errors and Warnings in the Log started happening since 4-11-2011.

The Warnings from 4-11-2011, i didn't even saw these till today:

Funny thing is that the OCZ Staff claims there isn't anything wrong with the SSD.

Seeing what happend thru the time i'm damn sure it's the SSD alright.
