upgrading w7 on un-activated vista?

Thread Starter
So, I am doing a build for a couple of elderly folks. Nothing fancy. At all.

In any case, their current machine has vista, from when it first disgraced the shelves of stores worldwide.

I was planning on using acronis to clone the old hard drive onto a newer, faster one, and then putting the new fast hard drive into the new fast computer, and booting it from there.

Of course, it would immediately tell me it needed to be reactivated. What would happen if I upgraded at this point? Would it work?

Or would I be better off using an OEM disc on the new desktop and just transferring their stuff from the old one?

Are you doing a build or just upgrading? If you have an upgrade disc for Win 7, you can boot from that and then upgrade over (sometimes you don't even have to). That would save you the trouble of dealing with Vista.

A clean install is preferred.

Here is a great guide to look at.
