Low quality audio with X-Fi in Ubuntu vs Windows

Thread Starter
Hey all, I just recently got a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer (and please don't criticize me, you ASUS fans -- I only got it because it was on sale for 20 bucks)

Got it all set up and tweaked on Windows Vista (Premium x64) and it sounds great. biggrin.gif
But I decided to switch over to my Ubuntu install to do some work (I prefer using Ubuntu over Windows whenever I can; ie, whenever my work doesn't require me to use Photoshop....) and it seemed to have installed correctly and everything, sound was working fine....but it seems to be putting out some really cheap sound quality.

I've tried it with a few different audio players (Exaile, Banshee, VLC), but it all sounds like it's missing a ton of the punch, crispness, and overall fidelity I've heard from Foobar in Vista with this card....

EDIT: forgot to mention, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. Will be upgrading to 11.10 later today.

I'm going to try a few more things to make sure I'm not missing a setting or something, but does anyone know how I might be able to get a bit better quality?

This is completely personal bias, because I don't have that much experience working in linux. But my Creative SB Audigy card was okay when in Ubuntu, sounded much better when I used it in conjunction with Windows 7. I am pretty sure it's because there just aren't any good drivers available for sound cards in Linux systems, or I just didn't know where to find them. So I had the same problem as you, did a bit of digging and thought the problem was lack of audio drivers for Creative cards, but I could be wrong. Hope for your sake I am...

Well Creative DOES have some sort of Linux driver available on their site: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp?searchString=XFiDrv_Linux

But I read somewhere that this is pretty much unnecessary now, since ALSA supports X-Fi natively. Which makes sense, because I didn't have any problems just plain using the card, it registered in the sounds prefs panel as SB X-Fi any everything. But that doesn't explain why the actual audio quality stinks....

Is Ubuntu even still using ALSA, or have they gone over to Pulse? I doubt either would produce the fidelity of actual dedicated drivers in Windows.

Ah yes, thanks for that correction. It's PulseAudio.
