BD has almost always been the king of encoding...It was only recently when things really "flipped" and they didn't flip totally, at that.

This is most likely only because they already have socket g34 boards in their servers and can re-use them with BD cpu's.

I heard a rumor about LM trying to find out how many AMD CPU's it would take to match one Intel XEON, I guess they found out.

this post makes me look like a bumbling idiot. i'm going to try to learn more about supercomputers tonight, but if any of that made sense to anyone and you want to try to explain to be the benefit of AMD vs Intel for a supercomputer that'd be cool

They use whatever works best for their workload, if a CPU is good at a certain task while staying within budget (cash, power and heat), then that is what they will use.

It has 16 independent integer threads. In laymen, that is 16 cores. The 256-bit foating point unit per module can be separated into two 128-bit FP units (and broken down further as well).

A module consists of a shared cache, two integer "cores" with independent schedulers, and a 256-bit FP unit with it's own scheduler.

the dozer modules are not half cores. they are not full cores either. you can call them 0.75 cores maybe.

so, 16 module dozer is not like 8 core, but 12 cores.

however, for the optimized/tailored multithreaded workloads, the modules can handle the load of a full core.

hence the leaning on supercomputer/server market for bulldozer.

lets face it - dozer was a server chip from the start - the fact that they released it to server market BEFORE they released it to desktop, and released 16 cores to servers and released only 8 cores to desktop, should have been indicators.

server market is a lucrative market. much more so than desktops.
