Ram overclocking tpf

I've never overclocked ram before, so I'd like a little help from fellow folders. I've got some rip jaws @ 1600mhz (I'll check the timing when I get home).

From what I have read, I go in the BIOS and change the timing or speed.
How long and what type of testing do you do after that?

What is too high of a voltage setting for 24/7 use? I'm starting at 1.5v.

What is more likley to lower the tpf the most, speed or timing?

On a SB chip I would not go above 1.65v.

I they are the basic 9-9-9 ripjaws, you can get them to 8-9-8-24-1t (I did) but no further. I did so at 1.61v

I did notice a small drop when changing ram, but nothing massive

From what I read when I was making my last build...

For SMP: Timings matter the most.

For bigadv/hugeadv: Speed is more important (almost as important as CPU clock speed).

For initial testing I use Memtest, I start it from a Ubuntu live USB stick, I think you can start it with just a normal install of Ubuntu (and possible other distros as well) from the Grub menu at startup but I don't have that menu setup, and on a single install of Ubuntu it won't be shown by default (with dual boot it usually show up).

I boot into Memtest and let it test for at least one pass successfully, then push the RAM some more, memtest, push it, rinse and repeat. Until it shows errors, then go back to last setting at let it run a few more passes. I usually stop at ~5 error-free passes but sometimes I've let it run overnight and almost for 24h sometimes too.

Then of course folding hugeadv (if that's whats your shooting for) in Linux. I use a saved WU that and let it fold the whole WU without any trouble before I take it live. This is as much as I can muster to be away for folding.

Memtest is also available for Windows and probably Ubuntu too, but running that from the OS really not lets you use all the RAM.

The common recommendation for SB seems to be 1.65V, but I've never played with one but that would probably be were I'd stop (and will once I get my new gear). But you'll probably see diminishing returns after a certain voltage, which will depend on the RAM, chip and probably board too.

I'd say speed, if you can run either 1866 9-10-9-24-1T or 2133 10-11-10-30-2T I would think that SB prefers the higher speed, but also something I haven't got any solid numbers on.

Push the speed up and shoot for 2133, but that requires the CPU to be pushed up too to take all the benefits of it. If you have the CPU@~4.5 I don't think you'll see much improvement over 1866 or if you have to lower the CPU clock to reach say 2133 instead of 1866 then there's not much point in running the RAM at that speed.
