Is "upconverting" pointless/a bad idea?

Will converting a CD to something of higher bit depth(say 32bit) or sample rate improve the quality/sound? Or am I just hearing things that aren't there with the files I have converted from 16bit to 32bit?

PS: Sorry if this is something heavily covered or easy to find but I honestly came up empty on info for this.

I have played with cd rips in my acid studio pro, changing bit rate upwards and heard almost no discernable difference.

edit: then again, I am prone to blasting disturbed and iron maiden in my headphones

Usually it's considered pointless/bad idea. Technically you can't gain anything in terms of quality/detail, and depending on the quality of the re-sampler there's a possibility to lose something although changing to a much higher sample rate/bit depth is usually better than changing to a closer one.

OK then I must have something wrong with me because for my flacs/cds moving them into 32bit wavs makes them sound better (to me). Strangely sample rate changes made them sound worse. Maybe it's not quality improvements I'm hearing as much as now I can hear more of what's going on in the song+depth? IE: I can make out more than the loudest instrument playing here words better. So this is all just my imagination? It's not that good...

Anyway I'm so confused as to why (been reading so correct me if it's wrong) studios still go from 96/48kHZ and 32-24bit down to 44kHZ and 16bit? Especially with CDs losing ground I'd think they'd want to move onto something like DVD. Or do they just think everyone is happy with crappy MP3/AAC? Seems so amusing that in the movie world HD is the big push and everyone's all about the quality and yet in the music world it seems like things are going backwards.

Upconverting is used in the mixing stage to push DSP artifacts to inaudible levels. For playback it's a pointless thing to do.

If the file format isn't already at a certain rate, there's no point adding empty bits to the equation. For example, during mixing, a multichannel mix tends to have a lot of artifacts during DSP so here the sample rate is at 2,822KHz and all the artifacts are dog-pilled to inaudible frequencies.

People can easily see the huge difference in quality for blu-ray and HDTVs. It's more easily accessible and on display everywhere. It also gets a lot of media attention and is marketed well.

Sound, people are content with. People are much more visual than audible. As long as they can hear the music and voices clearly enough they're happy. They don't really know how much they're missing detail wise and clarity wise, but they're fine with that. They also don't usually spend a lot of money on audio equipment. Often times an ipod is the best audio equipment in someone's home.

A blu-rays will still look significantly better on a crappy LCD TV whereas FLACs will sound like crap through crappy headphones.

Any newer TV + Bluray + anything above blindness = Common

High quality music + High quality player + High quality headphones + ears that can discern the difference = Uncommon

Ripping your own CDs adds even more hassle.

So you're saying that even if I had a studio master and a mp3 of a song; if I don't have the right equipment I wouldn't notice a difference? I guess it's hard for me just because even if I have a bluray on my netbook I can tell that it's a bluray (the mpegv ones play great) and not a DVD. I figured that source material would still be discernible even without the best equipment.
