Did I fry my 2500k?

Thread Starter
So I was getting some somewhat high temperatures with an RS240 loop on my 2500k and I decided to take the block apart and clean it. When I was putting everything back together I absentmindedly turned the computer on with the block not on the CPU . After about 5 seconds it shut itself off at which time I realized what I had done.

I put everything together right and turned it back on it everything works fine, but I'm hoping I didn't damage the processor. My temps are lower though!

If everything seems to be running okay is it possible I didn't damage it?

probably not, the instant it exceeded its tj max it shut itself down ( i think ).

You're fine

It should be alright. Mind you the time between the temp spike and the shut off can be worrying. But its designed to protect itself. As far as anyone can tell you at this point its okay if it works. If not well that is a possibility lol.

Yeah your ok, that was intels thermal protection turning it off before damage occurs

So it turned off by its self, I don't really think that the CPU will be able to get very hot in 5 seconds. You should be fine, that's if you didn't leave out that you smelt something burning.

You're fine, as it has been said already, there is a auto shut down feature on the chip for when it gets too hot.

That's the best news I've heard all week lol, and $215 I didn't have burning a hole in my pocket (no pun intended). Can exceeding a CPUs TJ max cause degradation like exceeding it's recommended voltage? Or is it more like, it either frys it or it doesn't?

haha no burning electronics smell

It can cause degradation from what I've heard. It's pretty hard to fry a modern Intel CPU, you almost have to do it on purpose.

Well, it's very hard to degrade a CPU because they usually always shut off before permanent damage can be caused.
