Another Bulldozer thread (I don't think it is terrible). - Page 7

As long as AMD makes cheapish chips, and the corresponding boards are cheap, I'll always consider them an option. Like wise, I'll always consider Intel an option, because although more expensive they do perform better. For me, when it comes to buying something, I look at weather it can do what I want it to, and if I can afford it.

I don't have a massive screen, in fact it's only 17", but it still works so I won't replace it, I would rather spend the money on hardware that can actually run modern games. However, since my screen is small, I can get away with lesser hardware. To me it wouldn't make sense to spend R2100.00 on a i5 2500k, when the games will still run on a FX-4100, albeit not as fast, but the FX-4100 only costs R1100.00.

That's just the way I see it though, I know others have different ideas and opinions. Right now I just can't justify the extra costs, but make no mistake if I could afford to build a more powerful machine, then I would definitely be buying an i5, no question!

its price already down. in 2-3 months, when 8170s arrive, i think silicon will have matured and it will be giving better performance. then it will be a great buy.

To the OP,

It's not terrible. The reason there's such a backlash against the FX line is that AMD's marketing made it out to be something it isn't. You don't talk smack about an upcoming product if you can't back it up.

The best FX processors right now are about as good as the Intel mid-range, and they seem to overclock like mofo's, which is a good thing, but AMD had everyone believing that Bulldozer was going to be the kind of bombshell they dropped when they introduced the original Athlon, and later, the first Athlon 64s. Instead, they released their answer to the original Pentium 4--massive clock rates, mediocre clock-for-clock performance, and poorly optimized for current software. And they're catching well-deserved flak just like Intel did back then. In both cases, a chipmaker rushed a not-ready-for-prime-time architecture out the door because they had reached the end of the line with what they had. If AMD could have figured out how to mass-produce a 4 GHz Phenom II X6, Bulldozer wouldn't be out yet except maybe as a server chip.

They'll make a winner out of the new architecture, I'm sure. But it's not what AMD promised, and they're just going to have to take the heat for it.

The problem with a lot of the criticism is that it is not fair or based on reality. There are people out there saying the FX series is slower than the Phenoms and the Core 2 Quads. And then there is this guy (warning profanity).

Every user who has the FX says differently, a new architecture which should be given time to mature IMO.

Well, it is slower than the 1100T in some tasks. Maybe not overall, but at some things it is slower.

I like AMD as much as the next guy, but they ran their mouths and didn't back it up. Now they have to suck it up, go back to the drawing board, and do better with Piledriver. The rules are the same for them as they were when Intel dumped that slug they called Willamette onto the world.

I'm certainly not bashing the FX series. On another thread, I said I was intrigued by the 4100 and tempted to get one just to see how far I could push it. It would be cool to own a 5 GHz processor, even if it's only as fast as the Intel i3 series.

Its only slower on floating point when you have APM enabled, So you need to disable it in the bios or do the AOD trick. Then it beats the 1100T in everything since its not dropping the cores down to 2.8ghz.

IMO its better in every way then a 1100t if you have a bios that supports it correctly or do the AOD trick. And also the fact that a 1100T maxes out around 4-4.2ghz where you can get 4.2ghz stock voltage on most bulldozer chips and 4.5 with 1 or 2 voltage bumps.

All the hate is coming from people that dont know what they are talking about, They read some review where the reviewer just ran it in a mother board which first added beta support for the chip and was messing up the turbo core and APM settings so running like a 8100. That or they used the stock cooler and were hitting thermal throttling.

As for me AMD has never failed to allow me to build a pc that will run everything I've thrown at it so until I see that day I'll continue to save some cash and go with AMD so I can use the savings for things like Graphics cards and water cooling stuff. This is just my 2 cents, well maybe it's closer to 4 cents biggrin.gif

Main gripes for me are:

1. Saying "of course it will have better IPC", granted I'm not for lynching the person who pushed this message as they may very well have been misinformed.
2. Dusting off the FX name, seems like an attempt to pass off a mediocre product using the good will generated from a great previous product. Tarnished the FX branding, shame on the marketeers.
3. Making a huge deal about how high it overclocks when non-power supply exploding 24/7 overclocks were comparable to Intel's Sandybridge line.

There are some positives though, such as the cluster design being pretty spot on in it's 80-90% the performance of a pair of theoretical non-clustered BD core. Unfortunately these theoretical cores would have been underwhelming so 80-90% of underwhelming is disappointing.
