I had an old case that was falling apart, so I gutted it, mounted everything to a 5/8" sheet of MDF, propped it against my TV and set a box fan next to it. This is my current HTPC.

My rig isn't that ghetto, but it's considered ghetto on many standards!

HACKED the side panel window for more fans (not needed now so will soon repair the window)

Hacked the front panel fan cover up for more air flow and added some toggle and rocker switches.

Hacked a drive bay out with a grinder so I could put a car head unit to test CD's before I made a long 20 second trip to the car.

Zip ties all over the place!

Great club!

Ghetto builder here... There's a little MacGyver in all of us!

I use used dryer sheets for filters on my fans!

If there's a cheap ghetto solution that works just as good as an expensive one, I'm down for the ghetto one!

No fan filter? Use a pair of WASHED panty hoes from a garage sale.

No light for room? Cut a broke blender power cord, solder the positive and negative leads to a 60W light bulb, wrap in duct tape, plug into wall.

Want to clean air in room? Hookup 3 120mm fans using a 3 to 1 molex connector to an old P2 computer without a CPU, or graphics card, add a makeshift dust filter, leave on while your at school. Come back will a dust free room.

I see this is a fairly old thread.

I've built a lot of "ghetto computers". Not as imaginative as what I've seen here, but ghetto none-the-less.

The system pictured below is my back-up gaming rig. The Dell Dimension 2300 case was fished out of a dumpster. CPU fan is socket A modded to socket AM2.

It currently houses an MSI board purchased at low cost due to cosmetic damage, a Phenom 9750, a GTX295, and 4 GB of memory.

To cool it down I have the metal mesh panel that goes on one my Antec 900 bays and small fans mounted to that, blowing air into the case from the CD-ROM bay. I then have a small internal fan that blows air from the bay toward the video card intake, to keep it cool. The exhaust fan came out of an AT power supply that was probably 15 years old. The front USB ports actually work and were stripped from an e-machines case. The power buttons and LEDs all work just like they did originally.

I never bought a case over $50 and I used parts from stuff I already have or stuff I've gotten for free. Yeah... this is the club for me.

Using a filed down plastic knife and a dead hard drive, i made a added an 40(44?)mm extra fan at the front of my case since i didn't have the 80mm fan that was meant to occupy that space.

My current computer is nice, but once, I made a K7 Athlon 2800 Asus A7N8X-LA Computer for under $100 for my brother, using pieces of computers I found on the side of the road waiting for the Garbage man to pick up. The case was a old HP from `99, bought the 350watt PSU, 2 fans, and he insisted on having a **** huge toggle switch on the front to turn it on. That was me drilling out the plastic and hot glueing it in, then wiring it to turn on a system that requires a modern on/off Microswitch. My brother later used this computer to Alpha-test Windows 7 for Microsoft. Ran full Aero with a Geforce 4MX 128 MB Video card. We called it "The Freinkein-Fish"

@Majestic Lizard

I actually have a similar computer setup as my home server. still has the Dell 475 Socket P4 3GHz with hypertheading @2.9GHz. But, intead of keeping a DVD-ROM in it, I opted to gut the system to bare minimum things. It has a old WD 40GB IDE HDD as it's OS HDD, a SATA Hitachi 1TB HDD, 1.5GB RAM, a XFX Geforce FX5200 128MB video card, Stock CPU cooler, (soon to be upgraded), and in the place of the drive bays, i cut out a piece of cardboard to house 2 fans I removed from a Targus Laptop Cooler-rewired to run off Molex plugs, then mounted on the cardboard to pull air into the system. Works like a champ

Currently Running Windows 7 Home Premium x86 stripped down to bare server Functions. We named it Fail Dimension, as it's a gutted Dimension 4600
