When my PSU was on its last leg, I took an old one I had laying around, stuck it in my case, plugged my HDD's into it and dangled the cord out of a spare expansion slot. Two PSU's in one case because I was too cheap to buy one big one. That 120MM fan in the back? Not a 12V fan; it's a 110V muffin fan I had laying around that I hardwired to the main PSU. Also take notice of the ghetto HDD mounting points...

Upgrading my CPU/MOBO/etc I bought a new PSU but retained the 2nd. It now powers a 3.5 HDD slot I made in the front of my case out of a server bay and there's a switch for it on my front panel. It and the 110V fan get power from the socket on the right so I'm able to swap out my main PSU without affecting any wiring.

(that "button" pops it out, heh)

Wiring's cleaned up a bit since the upgrade but it's still pretty ghetto in there...
