No site has even close to 100% of its member base as active unless they actively prune the list.

I was waiting for someone to say it. LOL. & you did just that.

xda-developers.
Guess what they're running? I just dare you. wink.gif
Now try and tell me vB isn't good.

Try harder next time. XDA sees around that many users daily. Oh & guess what? They use vB4.

i don't really think that vb couldn't support it, more that OCN didn't have the resources to support it.

Huddler does everything for them (Hosting, etc), OCN just needs to pay the bill

You're correct - from a performance and reliability standpoint, vBulliten was only as good as our (undersized) hardware. Our chief reason for making this move was feature growth. We could have easily kept the vB system running and done a significant hardware upgrade, but that would just be helping things stay stay stagnant.

Huddler, aside from being a managed service where we run on their hardware, has the scale to benefit from a true enterprise-level cluster as a backend. The economies of scale make that possible for them, when we could never manage that kind of benefit on our own.

That's almost his exact words, the point was they take quite the nice percentage from ad revenue, but everything is done up front for no charge. That's the main reason they focus on fairly large well-known/traveled sites, because they're almost assured a great ROI.

...and now you know why there are four ads on every page.

I just wish the leadership here was honest and upfront about things; obfuscating the truth (the change had nothing to do with "performance", as this setup is a dog compared to the prior version) just ticks people off.

Yeah i kinda stopped reading since page 6, But i cannot browse OCN on my laptop anymore without massive issues, and ANY web browser interfearing with other programs due to cpu usage spiking :/

So you're saying that you guys are trying to move OCN into a different direction?
How about being more open to the users that make up this community.
Reviews? So basically you guys are trying to be like other communities?

Now, why didn't you just communicate the funding need to the community ? How about Ad Free premier memberships for $20 a year or something. There were plenty of solutions to get the grade of services you needed. did you ask US, the community ??

There were plenty of ways to grow OCN without getting in bed with Huddler. Now lets ask the next question, who owns the site and the data now ? better read that contract. I hope you have a backup of the old site !!!.

There is no debugging to be done, this is the huddler platform. good luck retaining the community, because frankly they aren't going to put up with this for long and the solution is not a browser upgrade, its a total rewrite of the forum software. you don't make a cake with icing.

I can't believe I spent half an hour reading all twenty pages of this. There's a mixed bag of opinions and a few things I won't delve into, but for me, it spikes my i7 up to ~30% when I refresh or load a new page, and that's just one tab. I don't know what's going where or how thing will develop, but I must say, as open to change as I am, I'm 50/50 about the "upgrade."

I'll hope things get worked out, but so far I'm just seeing OCN morphing into other sites.

EDIT: Just noticed mbudden basically said this.

Ok, so can we agree on atleast one thing that needs to be changed?

Avatars should be simple images, not loading via Javascript, as this creates massive spikes of unusability for users while scrolling. Seems like a complicated method of handling something simple. The images don't cache or save after viewing either. I read this whole thread, every post. I went back a page where every single poster's avatar had loaded for me while i was reading that page, and the same 20-23% load on my Q9550 @ 4.2GHz was back, and it skipped everytime it loaded an avatar.

I mean... 23% load on a 4.2GHz quad across all 4 cores? That means a single core at 4.2 is going to be loading at 92%. That's absurd.

Other than that big issue, and some other things which are easily resolvable such as clicking on threads from the recent section below the carousel jumps you to the end of the thread, even if you've never read that thread before, we're in decent shape. The layout doesn't so much bother me, I like that the site can provide more content, and has greater features. There's some definite issues to be taken care of, but I do have faith.

However, I do know my usage will be significantly impacted as I can't get it to function properly using Opera, Opera Mini, or my standard browser on my Nexus S. It also runs absolutely terrible on the E6300 work PC with onboard graphics and 2GB of RAM. That leaves just my sig rig, which I'm only available to use for 2-3 days a week, and I like to take advantage of that time to play some games I miss on the days I work. I really am a big supporter of you guys, and I want to see this work, but you guys got a long arduous journey ahead of you.
