Unless you want to go for Sandy Bridge (or Ivy for that matter) I think something along the lines of a Phenom II X4 965 or 955 would be best for gaming. You can often get them to 4Ghz or at least close and they give good performance for their price.

For the GPU, I have been really happy with my 6950. They are not too expensive and can handle most games today with pretty much max settings.
Keep your eye out for a good deal in the for sale section, both of those can be had for a great price used.

Good luck with whichever choice you go with!

a 6950 would be a good card to get.

But IMO a 960T processor would be a better choice since you can unlock it to a X6 (most of the time) and even if you don't unlock it the lower TDP will give you overclocking advantages over the 955/965.

I am considering building i5-2500k system because its fits in my budget, but TBH it makes me feel like im cheating on my wife
if you know what i mean. Allways had an amd rig.

as far as upgrades I was looking at a Phenom II X4 960T for the cpu and a MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III 2GB for the gpu.
would these be a good choise and do you think my motherboard would hold them back ?

If you dont wanna cheat on your wife, your best bet is saving some money, aim for a 890FX or even 990FX board, get a Phenom II X6 (i know its overpowered for games, but you wont have to upgrade anytime soon, more and more games are getting optimized for multi-thread, and we can do everyday tasks with no hassle like checking mail, browsing the web and so on..) and certainly a new GPU... The 6950 TwinFrozr is an excellent choice and aslong as the mobo has a PCI-e 16x lane, you're pretty much safe.
