My thoughts

Thread Starter
The site make-over is something I've been looking forward to for some time, and these are my thoughts on it. Please do not flame me, we all have our own opinions on how things look or what they should look like, and there is no right or wrong. I haven't had the chance to look and test everything, but I'll try to edit this as I notice more things. These are my initial thoughts.

Pro's:
- Revamped review's section, which I will be posting in
- Bar up top with articles, gallery, etc., ease of use and ease of finding
- Entire ideal of moving forward and having a growing website, and catering to all of the members
- Being able to minimize sections of the site for easier browsing of sub-forums
- Revamped and better "rigbuilder"
- Sub-sections of each forum are on each line now, not mashed together on 1 line
- Editing/submitting a thread/reply/etc. shows you that it's working and greys out the screen. Nice touch to know that it's working.

Con's:
- Too much white and not enough contrast, reminds me of the stock look of reddit, which I dread
- Certain things do not stand out like they used to, i.e. rep and trader rating used to be visible to me at a very quick glance, the green square rep bar was helpful for those quick glances. I preferred these things sticking out.
- Marketplace archive? I'm not completely sure why this was done, but I'm sure there is a good explanation. None the less, I dislike it since it feels like there are 2 marketplaces I have to browse around now or I might miss something.
- The site feels too cluttered and minimalistic at the same time. As with the rep/iTrader ratings, certain things do not stick out like they used to. Before, this added a kind of ease of use and easy on the eyes feel which was different from any forum I frequently visit. The easier it is for me to find important information, the happier I am. With so many things being blended together and looking the same in the same colors and same fonts, it gives me a cold and unappealing feel instead of warm and attractive. Possibly more of a childish look than a sleek modern look, but sleek and modern sometimes takes away functionality. I'm not sure how to explain this better, but I hope people understand what I mean.
- Searching. Before, if I was in the for sale section, there was a drop down search that would search ONLY in that section, now it takes you to a general search and you have to manually select which section(s) you want it to search.
- Edit icon. It's much smaller and in an odd spot.
- +Rep is in an odd spot, I liked that it was around your actual rep, again, another ease of use thing.

Mediocre:
- The news/article scroll thing up top
- Larger quick reply area which is good and bad, previous one was a bit too small, but this might be possibly too large

Not sure on yet:
- Small private message spot? I hope private messages still pop up and say you have a new one, otherwise I might not see them.
- Search bar up top. The top is what you see first, having an entire top line for a search bar may be good or a little too much. I like it for now because it's super easy to find.
- Rig's in sig, can't automatically see peoples specs. Can cut down on space, but I sort of like how it was before. Not sure which way I like more.

I don't know if I'm the only one being annoyed by it, but when I click a link to a thread in "Recently discussed" it throws me right to the last post (or bottom of the page if it's never been posted in)

Completely agree with everything stated above. The lack of contrast on the new version is really diminishing the utility, comfort, and ease of use of this website. The previous look worked really well in terms of readability and ease of navigation.

I understand the desire/craze to go Web 2.0 on everything but making every thing a huge social media integrated experiment doesn't always work well. I definitely understand that the site needs to move forward but I hope the admins of the site are willing to listen to user feedback during this critical period.

Please provide more contrast and allow the option to have a minimal look. The fact that I now have to scroll down even more before I can begin to read the content is not a good sign. Remember, content is king. It's what makes people love this site and what makes them want to return to it. The more barriers you put up between that content and your users, the harder it will be for this site to retain its old members and attract new ones.

Thanks for listening.

I agree with a lot of this. And the "not enough color contrast" drives me nuts! It was better with more contrast.

Everyone that just posted is spot on.
Another pro should be that there shouldn't be any more 500 internal errors...at least for a while.

If there are more "500 Internal Errors" maybe they could add a few more of those neat technology facts to the page like they did when it was migrating. tongue.gif

Don't worry, they are. Everything's being taken into consideration and bugs are already being fixed / have been fixed. When we were in beta we were all prepared for this to happen. Besides, it's better when you have an entire community on something rather than a few testers. Aside from that, I think some people are getting the wrong idea from the migration. I can't speak from full experience because there's more than just one reason, however, one of the biggest reasons we migrated was because vBulletin couldn't handle the load, and upgrading to vB 4 would have broken a lot of mods and such that OCN uses / used.

I will answer what I can
Cons
The green bars were redundant as we have the flames indicating how much rep a member has (helpful yes but 2 things doing the same job).
The archived marketplace will die out as only threads that were created before the move are in there and as items are sold or withdrawn they will be locked/deleted, any new sales or wanteds will be in the new marketplace format.
Mediocre
The carousel can be disabled by going tyo your profile> edit account details and tick the Remove Homepage Carousel box

Not sure on yet
PMs still pop up and take you to the PM page
you can auto expand the first featured item in sig by going to your profile > edit account details and ticking Expand Featured Signature Item box

Completely agree with everything.

I nearly reped someone earlier when i went to quote them. I also don't like how your taken to the bottom of the page and on threads with more than 1 you get taken to the last page which is a right pain.
I too miss the rep counter and trader rating being more visible.

One pro you missed (but your not a folder) is that the folding stats are actually up to date and not a few days/weeks out.

EDIT: Also have you noticed that people with small signatures have added white blank lines to make their posts bigger

It was a nice feature when you hovered over telling your your rep status. Now if i hover over my flames it tells me i have 2 flames kookoo.gif
