It's definitely subjective. But if you are that passionate about it, let's talk specifics about what you do not like. This is a platform for us. It's not stagnate. Things can be refined.

We are looking into it. Please give us a little time. This is not something that was a noted issue in the sandbox. We have been live for all of 1/2 day (at most). Identified problems can get looked at. Words of disgust are obviously a lot trickier.

I didn't really read everything before. Since Admin is actually replying in here, it means he's reading it too. So, here's some initial input on the new site after just a few mins of looking around.

A) All White = bad. It is a fundamental design consideration of software development and human factors design practice that bright colors cause eye strain and decrease usability. Your original blue-themed setup was much better.
B) Last Post click function in each board now goes to the last post by anyone, rather than the last post read by the logged in user. So now rather than continuing from where you were, you have to remember each last post in each section you read, or click through possibly dozens of them before you find where to continue from. Horribly reduced usability.
C) The whole scrolling gigantic graphic at the top of the main screams "we want to be like CNet". It's annoying. You'd be better served with a Java-based scroll or something that requires less space that you can contribute more to increased, express access linkages to content rather than looking at scrolling images of bad graphics and keyboards.
D) Decrease the width of the right-hand display section by about 5-10 percent.

That's just from about 10 minutes of browsing. I haven't done any configuration stuff (other than I noticed that you have one of the annoying issues that TechRepublic's new implementation had...default subscription to any thread you post in...).

Since you were here, Admin, I thought I'd give some feedback that would get direct to you. Otherwise, I'd have just left the chips to fall where they may.

B: It's a bug, you can go ahead and report it.

D: You can hide that right column: My Profile > Edit Account Details > "Hide right column in forum threads".

A) We tried to strike a balance. It's actually pretty close to the old site (we did a bunch of comparisons). Try toggling off the right hand column in your preferences to see if that helps any more. The problem is, not using some white = floating image syndrome (as I call it). The site becomes a patchwork of floating images on a dark background. It makes it nearly impossible to expand. That's why you see most major sites not use a fundamentally dark background. We have this currently happening on our product pages on this site until we change the template a bit (http://www.overclock.net/products/ - see how the white background images look "bad"? - this is compounded further the more we stray away from a white base background for content.

B) It's a bug I believe :) Many have brought it up and it's being looked into.

C) You can disable it in your preferences. We are not trying to be anyone with it other than ourselves. We need a way for Editors to feature great content. This is our first stab at it. Again, you can turn it off :)

D) You can turn it off as well (it moves to the footer).

Does that help?

Thanks :)

I'm gonna make a note in here for everyone that this is the ONLY time OCN as we know it has changed platforms, ever. Obviously changing something that everyone thought worked for the past 6+ years is going to be viewed initially as a bad thing, but I guarantee you admin is doing this to ensure that in the long run, OCN will serve to be the best out there, or at least very close. There are many short-term issues, especially permissions issues (most have been reported already, I believe, they should be quite high in priority when noting them) that need to be plowed through, but once all the little bugs (which are really adding up, I'm sure) are smashed we can move forward with the site as planned.

vBulletin is forum software; I honestly have no idea why users are reporting increased resource usage by their browsers when viewing "new" OCN; neither Firefox nor Opera are pulling any extra resources on my end, even with about a dozen tabs of the new site open. I'm fairly certain the site's cache had to be rebuilt from scratch, and still is (correct me if this is wrong, admin), so it will gradually become faster. Any outstanding issues with server/connection load may already be being worked on, as well.

Admin, is there any way to remove this part?

And also, is there a setting that automatically resizes large images to 640x480?

Edit: Scratch the last part.

Thread Starter
I didn't know people would be so upset about some of these changes. Personally, I feel bad that the admins have gone through all of the countless hours of work and trouble changing the site just for so many people to wish it looked like it did before. But the new look and feel of the site has me not wanting to come back to it. All of the white and brightness really reminds me of the user unfriendliness of reddit, and I don't think thousands and thousands of people should have to customize their profiles to get the website to look more like they want it to. I feel maybe there should be a popup that says you can add new features, and if they click a checkbox, enable such features, i.e. the right bar and the scrolling thing on the front page. Kind of like how when you install a program with many features it asks you what you want to go along with it.

But all in all, I'm not enjoying OCN like I used to. It was the only tech forum/site that I enjoyed browsing because of he warm colors, fonts, and layouts, and it just feels cold to me now. I definitely don't want to be a flamer demanding this change or that change "or I'll take my business elsewhere" because I'm sure some people do like the new layout, but it isn't for me, and sadly, I won't be logging the same kind of hours that I used to spend on OCN if it stays as is.

The very top of that is very important I believe (the preferences are very useful) - but as we build up some data, we will further optimize the interface. If people are not using that section, you can bet it will be gone :) For now though, I think we have to defer to the metrics.

I completely agree with everything I have read here. My contributions:

Content: Currently the site is not using my full widescreen, and the ads etc are eating into the little left/right space I have
Next page: Small buttons, hard to get to.
Lack of contrast, etc, its been said, but I agree.
Signatures: they look too much like the rest of the posts.
Signatures: I think I prefer the main rig being displayed in line with the post, perhaps in a very small font? It is very slow to go to the next page to see what someone is running.

The subforums menu: It does not work with the keyboard arrow keys, and it should, as I usually use the keyboard instead of my mouse, especially on my laptops.

Thanks for reading!
