Lots of problems with Asio, Volume on Xonar ST

Thread Starter
Okay, so when I originally got this card. Everything went pretty well with my sound. I installed Asio for Foobar2k, configured it and all was good to go. Until I decided to skin the thing, which broke so many things I had to reinstall Foobar.

Now when I install ASIO and use it, I can't use the Master volume control through the Xonar utility. Only the in-app volume control. This makes it so that everything is ridiculously loud and it's becoming very frustrating. When I DON'T use ASIO and I switch to regular Directsound output, I can use Master control, but NOT the in-app volume anymore!

Also, when under ASIO, it takes control of all my sound on my machine and I can't hear things in my browser or games. Making listening to music while playing games pointless. This WASN'T the case before I reinstalled Foobar, so this is extremely frustrating. If I don't use ASIO (which I'm forced to due to these issues) I can't control sound within Foobar... only master control, forcing me to lower my game's music as well as my music.

This is extremely frustrating... I really don't know what to do to get it the way it was before I reinstalled Foobar...-_-

using ASIO is supposed to isolate audio to an app, in this case foobar2000

Newer Driver for Xonar ST(X) volume control is app dependent when used with ASIO

If you want audio while playing games I suggest not using ASIO
or if you want you could roll back to older driver for xonar, however I heard ASIO wasn't working properly with those drivers, which was why you were able to use ASIO and hear other things

I also would like to add that in case you are going to use ASIO with newer driver. Be very careful to watch the music player volume since like you noticed, it ignores the windows volume especially if you are using headphones. You may hurt your ears by accident.

Asus Xonar drivers are known to be completely broken on multiple levels. Get rid of this card and get a card from another manufacturer.

Just use Winamp, bro.

Does winamp fix this issue??? when the issues come from drivers? This is news to me. I'm going to try this. I highly doubt this will work.

EDIT:
I can't seem to find ASIO playback on winamp... Going back to foobar2000. I don't like winamp's complicated features haha

but I'm sure OP's problem wont be fixed simply switching media player

Well, how about the issue of the players volume control not working when I'm not using ASIO? That's pretty weird to me. You'd think both master and Foobar's would work on DS output.

Hrmm. That is weird. Why dont you check the Windows Volume mixer. you can do this by clicking on volume icon on tray area bottom right of the screen. and click on mixer. win 7 can change volumes individually and sometimes things can cause them to set to lower levels. If you happen to use VOIP softwares like skype teamspeak ventrilo and etc you can prevent this by going to communication tab in speaker setting and set it to "Do nothing" go there by. Right clicking on volume control bottom right, communication tab

EDIT
Just realized that what you are having problem has nothing to do with the above problem...
I think all I can suggest is to reinstall foobar2k and or driver for your XOnar

I would suggest you try WASAPI as an (supposedly) equal alternative to ASIO but from personal experience with Foobar (and WinAmp) combined with Xonar I'm not going to. It's a shame because I know you can make Foobar look really nice - more than any other player I think. I ended up with J Rivers player, just because it worked properly without plugins or any "jumping through hoops" stuff for both ASIO and WASAPI (as far as the Xonar drivers allowed it).

WASAPI has problems with xonar as well. It causes popping when you explore windows and open folders frown.gif
