Learning coding for UDK, and I have a few questions about getting started

I tried delving into programming once before with C++ but with uni kicking off I never found the time to pursue the side hobby among other things. Now I'm trying to learn how to use UDK and would it be best to find tutorials for Unrealscript or simply learn programming from the ground up with a language?

You should learn programming from the ground up, using a real programming language. UnrealScript, besides having very limited tutorials, and a "something" API, is a scripting language. Besides the point of it being a scripting language, it was developed for programmers that have experience with a programming language. I am sorry I can not give a full answer, as this would go on forever.

However, if you need some help feel free to PM me. I am always willing.

So what language would you recommend for a beginner in that case?

Well I am going to be 100% unorthodox, but if you have the drive, I say start with C/C++. I know everyone tells you not to because it is hard(er), but it is the industry standard; thus a lot of games and tools are programmed using C. Not only that, when I started programming, I started with C, and found that most languages I picked up (such as Java) were fairly easy once I had a firm understanding of C. That being said I have been using Java for a year now, and I quite like it. C# would be good to.

When it comes down to it, no programming language is better than another. You pick the one that suits the requirements for the job you are going to accomplish. However, there are games, tools, and library's written in (and for) most languages.

Yea, it will be hard, and it will take a lot of work, but you can not go wrong with it. If you need help Google is your friend, as is your local library. Besides you can always post here.

Good luck,
Tig
