FX 6100 Upgrade

Thread Starter
I jumped on the 6100 after my 1100T fried..

Even though the CPU is working perfectly fine, a friend who is interested in trying BD told me he would like to buy it from me..
Long story short, is the 8120 a good upgrade..? Running at 200MHz less and seeing it's power hungry [and all the hate around it, which I don't want to discuss], and that the 1090T beats it, I got this, the 8150 and the 1090T in the balance..

I would like to support the new technology, but I'm unsure if buying a 1090 and waiting for Piledriver would be a good alternative..

A 1090T doesn't beat an 8120. BF3 benchmarks at low resolutions (to avoid gpu bottlenecking) show the 8120 beating the 1090T by 10%. Can probably dig up a link if you need proof

I wouldn't buy the 1090T if you have an FX-6100 sell it to your friend and get the FX-8120 preferably from Amazon...

This is exactly what I wanted to hear, but I would certainly appreciate some benches if you have some around..
I think at $190, the 8120 is a good deal..

What type of benchies?

Server, HPC, Workstation, Gaming, Mainstream?

The First 3 you are going to be better than the 1090T
Gaming you are going to be the same as the Intel counterparts minus Multi-GPU performance
Mainstream, Look for programs that don't use MMX SIMD instructions

Waiting for PileDriver would not be wise. AMD often delay their product and it's just too often.
Remember Radeon HD 6900 were delayed? Llano? Bulldozer? Radeon HD 7000 also facing similar problem (but it does not seems to be AMD fault this time).
I don't think AMD can deliver PileDriver on the right time.
Just get FX-8120 if want a good upgrade.
About how FX-8120 performs, it shouldn't be far from Core i5 2500K in multi threaded application. But it lacks in game and single threaded Application.
Performance in game is slightly better than Thuban or Deneb but performance in single threaded Application is slower than Thuban or Deneb.
But it overclocks much better than Thuban or Deneb. Wouldn't be a bad idea if you give it a try.
Especially you already had ASUS Crosshair V Formula.

I'd say sell it to him and get an 8120. But that's only because I love having new things to play with. It only doesn't make sense to get the 8120 if you already had a Phenom II, but since you're basically starting from scratch (selling your current CPU), I think it's more wise to go with the 8120.

It's on par with the i5 2500K when the SIMD performance is moved from the CPU to the GPU

I wouldn't want to be playing games at 800x600 to 1650x1080 when I have a 120Hz 1920x1080 TN monitor or a 60Hz 2560x1600 S-IPS monitor
