conflicting opinions about bottleneck

Thread Starter
I seem to be getting conflicting answers from various sources on this question. I currently have a Phenom II x4 970 overclocked to 4.0 GHz. I currently have a single 6970. I would like to add a 2nd card for crossfire. Various people have been telling me that my cpu would DEFINITELY be a bottleneck on a 6970 cfx. Others have told me I have nothing to workk about. What is the real true answer. Anyone with an actual Phenom II x4 900 series care to comment. Will my cpu bottleneck a pair of 6970s? Thanks

Well it all depends on the game you are playing some games are CPU heavy and in that case yes you will see a slight bottleneck in GPU as your cpu can only go so far and your graphics cards being so overpowered you will bottlneck them Other games that are more GPU dependent you wont see a bottleneck at all i.e BF3 hope this helps

Turbo

btw what cpu cooler are you using to get that 970 to 4ghz i also have a 970 and am just curious

interesting, I am mostly interested in playing the more recent games (Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, BF 3, Skyrim, etc)

given that there MIGHT be situations in which my cpu would bottleneck, does that still make adding a 2nd 6970 (or i might sell my current 6970 and put in a 6990) a worthwhile upgrade? I am a hardcore gamer that loves eye candy. I like to max out all settings in 1920x1080 with max AA (8x) with vsync.

People always misunderstand what a cpu bottle neck is.

Would you get higher FPS with a Sandy Bridge cpu and your Crossfire setup? Yes. Does that mean the Phenom is a bottle neck? No.

A true cpu bottle neck means your gpu is limited by the cpu. The way to test for this is to lower your resolution, test FPS, lower resolution, test FPS, lower resolution, test FPS. As you lower your resolution your FPS should go up. If your FPS remains constant or nearly constant as you lower resolution than you have a cpu bottleneck.

So you can easily test yourself. No, you won't have a cpu bottleneck. Now you can get a bit more performance in most games upgrading that cpu but you will still see a benefit from upgrading to a Crossfire setup with your Phenom II.

so in your opinion, is it worth the cost in upgrade, give the cpu i have?

Well I guess it depends on how much you value performance. The only thing that gives me pause is I read a rumor that the 7970 might be coming out in January. If this is at all the case I would seriously consider waiting as it is believed the 28nm cards will be quite a bit faster than current gen. It is what I am tacitly planning on buying.

Check the CPU/GPU usage on a benchmark

If your CPU is 100% and your GPU is less than 95% you have a CPU bottleneck

But the problem for you it is the chipset bottleneck

HT 3.0 -> 10.4GB/s
PCI-E X16 x2 = 16GB/s

But, I have been told you only really need 8x

PCI-E X8 x 2 = 8GB/s

That's the rather lovely thing about opinions; they're conflicting, until someone enters with fact; long story short, when it comes to BF3, your x4 isn't even a bottleneck with the GTX 580.

I agree that he isn't going to be bottle necked as I said.
