[Tom's Harware] Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: PC Performance, Benchmarked

Skyrim simultaneously taxes CPU and GPU resources. So, if you’re looking to run at ultra detail settings using 1920x1080 and texture transparency AA, you need a Sandy Bridge-based CPU and a Radeon HD 6850 just to hit a 30 FPS minimum. For a smoother experience, consider a GeForce GTX 570 or Radeon HD 6970, or maybe even a dual-card setup. Nvidia hit us with its 285.79 beta driver capable of enabling SLI in Skyrim, while AMD claims its CrossFire driver is on the way. It's just a shame there's nothing to show the folks looking to play this game with a pair of Radeons at launch.

The good news is that you don’t need an uber-rig to enjoy the game. A 2.5+ GHz Phenom II matched up to a Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTX 550 Ti is enough to enjoy at least 40 FPS using high-quality details at 1080p, even with FXAA enabled to help smooth out the bothersome aliasing artifacts. That’s a reasonable requirement that probably won't necessitate many upgrades. Best of all, the result looks almost as good as ultra-quality details.

Gamers at the entry-level side of the spectrum should be happy to learn that a GeForce GT 430 or Radeon HD 5570 delivers a 35 FPS minimum frame rate at 1680x1050 using medium details. As settings drop, so do CPU requirements. So, any dual-core processor running at 2 GHz or more should be ample.

I'm sure we are all getting this game, if not now, then when GoTY edition comes out.

Side note, how do I change text color back to my usual poop brown color that everyone loathes?

man im tired i was up till 4.30am playing Skyrim and had to drag my self to university today frown.gif

anyhow.....been playing on the pc and its been great so far although I encountered some nasty frame drops early on. The issue seemed to subside after notching AA down abit and also shadows but still havent pinpointed the cause.

Enjoy everyone!

I'm hoping my 6970 will play it okay without having to turn down the details too much. Stupid 2560x1600 screen.

Do you really need a sandy bridge based CPU?

I'm hoping to max this out with my Phenom II X4 970 at 4.0ghz with my 5870 @ 1080p

Will be installing this later today when my copy arrives in the post - is the steam activation as bad as my recent FM2012? where I had to download 5-6gb of data before being able to play the damn thing?

Loving the new OCN btw! thumb.gif

I'm getting excited about the game, its cool. Below is up to when you exit into the real world. Nothing special about the DX9 stuff jealoussmiley.gif

Ok tried new drivers! They seemed ok, apart from some bad shadowing effects in Skyrim when things move. Though I do have it on ultra everything, still doesn't go below the 60FPS mark biggrin.gif

IMO it isn't the most graphically impressive game, in honesty, it looks ever so slightly outdated. We all know we don't play it for that though wink.gif.

One of my steam friends sent me some screen shots of it and I said that it looked a lot like Oblivion. Very similar lighting effects and so on. Hopefully it wont be as boring as Oblivion was. I was so disappointed by Oblivion after playing Morrowind.

I'll definitely get it, question is --when? (probably when it goes on sale in a couple of weeks tongue.gif)
