Onboard to Dedicated, worth it?

Hi

So im at a crossroad where ive invested the correct amount in decent headphones (JVC HA-RX900 with a small mod). But im not very satisfied with the output of the sound from my on board sound (constant light hissing and some grizzling and also driver issues).
Would upgrading to a dedicated sound card be worth it? Most important question is would i hear a noticeable difference in sound quality and "ingame envelopment".

if yes what kind of investment am i looking at, id probably be willing to put in 50 or 60€.
and what kind of recomendations would you make.

keeping in mind that i will only by from this site.

Grab the Asus Xonar D1. DX if you prefer longevity of the card's usefulness since PCI may be done away with. Both cards are the exact same. D1 is just PCI and cheaper on that site.

You should definitely notice a difference in sound, even with Rx900s. Even with the Xonar DG, the cheapest sound card on that site, you should notice a difference. IMO, the D1 is worth the upgrade from the DG.

The D1 is a little bit better in the fact it doesn't need a PCI to PCIe converter chip.

also what is the gain in getting a sound card like the Xonar Essence STX ?

are they really worth the money?

STX uses a better DAC which gives you improved sound quality. It also has a built in amplifier for harder to drive high impedance headphones.

As a whole, spending money on audio equipment is definitely worth it. Whether the "STX" is worth it is completely subjective.

I don't feel the STX is worth it at 180.

130 is a different story.

but for my gaming purposes and mild music listening would it be worth it or the DX is more that enough?

is was thinking is it worth the hassle of getting the ASUS XONAR XENSE (PCIe) + SENNHEISER PC350 bundle and selling off the SENNHEISER PC350 for about 120€ that would make getting the ASUS XONAR XENSE for about 100€ similar price of a D2X or D2.

Well, that would be a really smart idea if you could actually get someone to buy that from you for 120 Euros.

If you really just want it for gaming though, I would look into buying a Creative card rather than an Asus card. For some reason, gaming is just better for positioning on Creative cards.

Am on the junior RX700 and even with a less than high end headphone amp section of the Fiio E7 I can confidently state that it brings the RX700 to the next level thumb.gif
