AMD boy needs advice on committing treason (is this a good config?)

Hi,

I've been running AMD for 11 years (I have an intel laptop, but it doesn't count), and given all the problems I am currently experiencing (video issues, bad hard drive performance, 2 dead HDDs, 1 dead DVD), I'm considering going Intel this time.

I'll be just replacing CPU, Mobo and Ram, while keeping the Radeon (I've tested it in other systems and seems to be OK). So...
· i5 2500k
· MSI Z68A-GD65 G3

Is the motherboard OK? In the vortez.net review they were able to hit 5.0GHz, seems pretty good to me. I won't do CrossFireX or SLI (maybe just 2 radeons, but not right now). I want a reliable board. And I don't want to spend a lot (<200€).

Regarding the RAM, I don't know what to choose. There's a G.Skill 1866MHz 1.5V kit that seems good (CL9), but I wonder if I'll be able to achieve better performance with lower latency and/or voltage RAM.

I never thought I'd ever had an intel desktop, I feel really bad tongue.gif

intel systems at this moment in time are far superior than amd system dollar for dollar. but you cant blame your amd setup for bad hard drives and bad dvds. anyways good luck with new build thumb.gif

I think the mobo is toasted, probably because of a PSU I had a year ago. I blame the system as a whole, not individual AMD components smile.gif

The Asus P8Z86-V Pro is a good choice to go with as well. There have been many good comments on that board in this forum. Probably do a search on it. As far as I know, Asus recently released the board with support for PCIe Gen3.0 as well. So you should be good for IB as well when it releases in the near future.

Been doing my research recently, as I am contemplating an upgrade as well. Just thinking if the wait for IB will be worth it. smile.gif

I've only found a shop that sells the P8Z68-V Pro Gen 3, and it's way out of my budget.

I made the jump not long ago.

Fairly big difference in gaming. Things are smoother. I was also able to pull more FPS with the 5770's I had (still have). I was able to go from High settings to Ultra in BF3 with them, all from the switch to a 2500k and DDR3.

I had a Phenom II 945 at 3.6GHz. Might not be as big of a jump for someone with an x6 though.

Imagine what kind of step will be from my 9950@3GHz to a 2500k.

Go for it buddy! You wont regret it trust me. I made the jump 5 days ago I had a 1090t oced to 4.0 and I jumped to SB i7 and even at stock speed it ate my amd setup. AND I found huge gain in cpu intensive games! Just go for it wink.gif
Best of luck
