Asrock extreme 4 gen 3 - Downclock problem 4.9ghz

Dear All,

finanlly got my new workstation machine, build for 3dmax render.

Asrock extreme4 gen3 - 2600K
16 corsair vengeance

I have overclocked the cpu after a lot of reading in the forum learning how to keep voltage low etc and did
an all night IBT on exterme and an all night prime95.Both were stable.
temperatures 75C on full load after all night IBT (cooling h100 corsair)
Vcore - 1.37V on offset mode with Level 2 LLC

My problem is that i want my CPU to downclock when not in 100% use.
I have been messing with long/short power limits but haven't been able to achieve this frown.giffrown.giffrown.gif

When i log into windows it is indeed 1.6ghz but only stays there for few seconds. I can see the voltage / multiplier
jumping to 49X from 16X even though my CPU utilization is 10-12% (idle) and very rarely would be somewhere in between (ie. 20X 30X)

I have tried short - 200 / long -180 but is was not downcloaking...then when i lowered more the limits...short - 150 / long - 120
it was dropping its multiplier under load...so i could see during prime95 its was going from 45-49X (not fixed on 49X)

So anyone can suggest how Short and long power limits works?? what settings i will need?
I have searched soo much but there is very little information about this.

Welcome V_panos to ocn!
To downclock your cpu when at idle or just surffing enter bios and enable speedstep.

Hello thank you for the initial tip smile.gif

does yours down clock on a stable multiplier...i rarely see it cloacking down to lower than 49X even though speepstep is enabled...and when it does is so brief it would only last for few seconds.
So i keep seeing also my Vcore stuck at 1.360V on idle even though its on offset...very strange...

hrmm..1)enable "Enhanced Intel Speedstep
2) enable c1e..all c-states (under cpu tab)

i have the extreme3..it clocks down like a champ

The multiplier is jumping between 16 and 49 because speed step feels that 10% usage is enough to raise the multiplier. In Windows my multiplier always seems to jump around even when I am not really doing anything although it is more steady in Linux. Changing the power limits won't help you as lowering the limits will only cause the CPU to downclock when it is under load and exceeds the current that you set.

so that might be the explanation ? :S its would ve been nice if the multiplier could scale upwards according to demand..so on almost idle
situations Vcore is lower (at the moment is 1.360) so also consumption.

I guess you can ask for everything...C states are all enable...i will go through bios one more time and report back here...enhance speedstep? I am not sure i have seen this option...

i will report back soon..thank you guys for the help...

Found the solution on the end..it wasn't speedstep or C-states under the Cpu tab....
on the OC tweaker just above the Vcore voltage there is an option for energy saving that if you enable it does downclocks nicely...!

temperatures on 28-32C , Vcore just under 1V smile.gif awesome so if anyone has the same issue this is the option that you need enabled.

Glad to hear! I was just in my bios having look around to see what hasen't been mentioned. Kinda makes ya feel good when you figure things out on your own.

glad i found it cause it seems wastefull to have a cpu "reved" up for nothing...and i was messing for so long with the wrong settings of the power limits that on the end had no effect.
Atleast its on the forum now so any Asrock extreme 4 gen3 owners can refer to it.

And at the end of the day never found any documentation about Short/Long power limits and their use...its a shame the Asrock booklet is just a basic quick guide.
