What's this dimple?

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could inform me as to what this dimple on my Q6600 is?

If I Google Q6600 and look at the various pictures, I can see that some of them have this dimple and some don't.

It doesn't concern me, but I thought I should ask as I plan on lapping my Q6600 today and wanted to know if this changes anything, as it is a considerable indentation (maybe 2/3's of a millimeter) and I wasn't sure that I'd be sanding off as much nickel as that?

Also on the subject of lapping, I plan on following this guide, that I believe was originally made for OCN:

What are the risks of lapping? I understand it voids the warranty, but on a processor as old as this (and that I bought off someone else), I don't think I need to worry about that.

Apart from water damage, which should be easy enough to avoid, the only possible problem could be static, which I have seen a couple of people mention. Is this a really a potential risk? I'm lapping purely for the sake of it, as I don't intend of doing any extreme overclocks, I just like the idea of there being a copper-on-copper transfer between my Freezer 7 Pro and the IHS, and it can't hurt to have temps as low as possible. However, is there is a real risk of invisible damage, that I only find once I power up and the chip is dead, I'll definitely give it a miss.

Thanks,
safe

The old socket 478 CPUs had something like that, only it was a "hole" and wasn't filled.

With those CPUs, it has something to do with the process of making them or attacking the IHS or something, and it's totally normal, so I'd presume the same applies here, even though the hole seems "filled". It will not affect anything, so pay it no mind.
