[New Build] Old School Rig

Thread Starter
My Intention was to design a computer that I greatly desired (or would have, had I fully understood what I do now about computers) in the 2007 - 2009 era of C2Q's. Back then the things that impressed me the most were cheap, large amounts of memory, space, and of course the number of cores a CPU had.

The computer that I ended up buying back then was these specs:

C2Q Q8200
ECS crap board
OCZ 8GB DDR2 667mhz memory
Nvidia 9500GT 1GB (it had 1GB of memory, it must be fast!)
500W sparkle psu
Artic Cooler
Hitatchi 1TB HDD
Mac G4 case.

Its not that the computer ran terribly, but by the time I figured out a couple years later (2009 the enlightenment came) the computer had already gone through several components because of the cheap crap dying. When I finally ended up building a solid rig from the ground up, it was the 1366 era and I always regretted not having some old school power to play around with.

When my brother joined the Warrant Officer Candidacy School (portion of the Army to fly helicopters) he donated me his dell that he had purchased several years back. I saw this as a chance to finally build my "Old School Rig" - now that isn't to say that this is 100% old school, as it does have some modern amenities as you will see, but I tried to keep it original and faithful while having good performance.

Below is what I ended up with:

Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz
Asus Rampage Formula Motherboard
4GB (2x2GB) G.Skill DDR2 800Mhz Memory
Corsair H50 with Push / Pull Yate Loon High Speed fans
(2x) Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2
Rocketfish 900w Modular PSU
Raid-0 500GB Seagate Barracuda Drives (1TB total) with 500GB Samsung backup drive
Asus Xonar DX Audio card
Lian-LI PC-K62 Case
Lite-On DVD-RW

Hope you enjoy the pictures below, I know I enjoy looking at it - the CPU just has a quick preliminary o/c, I plan on trying for 4GHZ if possible, heat doesn't seem too bad as its only reaching mid 60's @ 1.4v. The GPUs are hitting low temperatures @ 800mhz core, I'm sure that they will do more with some voltage, again just a quick o/c smile.gif

I think the "Retro" designation requires at least an AGP or earlier card interface. In my books this thing is still faster than 95% of the PC's out there in the real world beyond us OCNers.
