Low GPU usage on Skyrim - GTX 570 TFIII

Thread Starter
Hey all.

So I have a GTX 570 TFIII OC'd to 930mhz core.

In skyrim on Ultra settings at 1080P I am consistently getting less than 60 FPS. I figured that would be the case, but then I became bothered because Afterburner reads that my GPU usage is usually around 60%. based on my SigRig, do you guys think I'm getting CPU bottlenecked?

I have always wanted to get my PII 955 BE to 4.0ghz. Do you all think it will help the apparent bottleneck that is killing my gtx 570?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

According to Tom's, Skyrim scales very well with increased CPU speed, and you could probably scrape out an additional 5fps or so by going to 4GHz. I'd definitely work on your phenom's OC if possible. Happy OCing! biggrin.gif

Well even at 4.0 ghz you probably won't see too much of increase in performance, but then again why do you need to? even at 60 fps its smooth as butter. you only have a 60 hz monitor right?

yep looks like a cpu issue. maybe go for an x6?

X6 not in the budget at the moment. maybe next year. I am currently hooked up to my 46" Sammy LED for skyrim, set to 60hz game mode to reduce input lagginess.

I am getting between 25 and 45 FPS usually, and 60 at other rare times. I haven't looked hard but I didn't see a vsync option anywhere.

Do i need to play at Ultra? No. But with a $400 video card you kind of hope you can...

Interestingly, GPU usage is much higher indoors, typically around 80%, and outdoors it plummets to 40% (when I get 25-30 FPS). Apparently the rendering outdoors on Ultra is CPU intensive. Now I need to find a good OC guide for the PII x4 955, because I havent touched it since I installed it and i've never been comfortable OCing a CPU (lack of knowledge about specific BIOS settings, etc).

Anyone know a good walkthrough guide? I have come across a few things on this site but nothing comprehensive. I'd love to actually know what I'm doing, not just "set this number to this and hope for the best" type guides.

How you all liking Skyrim?

Based on the Tom's link (particularly given it's showing results using the EXACT same setup as you have), it's pretty apparent that you need to get the CPU cranked as much as you can.

It's pretty logical that indoors would be lower CPU usage (and hence higher GPU usage in a CPU-BN'd scenario) ... because a good chunk of what hits your CPU in many games is the AI calculations for the NPC's ... and obviously indoors there's typically going to be only a fraction of the NPC count you'll get outdoors. There's also going to be less geometry calcs due to the limited view distance.

Unfortunately I know of no guides, but I'd guess you could start up a thread in the AMD CPU section and get a bunch of OCN'ers helping you thumb.gif

BTW, I'll let you know, as I'm presently d/l'ing it as we speak from the Steam. Very excited ... too bad I'm at work so all I'll get away with is firing it up for a few minutes to show it to the collection of geeks here at the office but tonight ... the wife is at a fashion show (this AM she's asking me if I wanted to go and I'm like "PPFFFFFFTTTTTTT ... Sounds great but, yeah ...no. I got OTHER PLANS BABY!!!")

Also ... the Tom's results suggest that the game is dual thread, so there's not going to be any advantage to a hex-core vs. your current quad. In fact, it'd probably hurt you because typically more cores = less OC'ability. If Skyrim is all you're going to be doing for a while, you might even want to consider disabling two cores if you find that doing so gets you to higher clocks.

Hm... maybe it's just not optimized for PC.

On a side note, the GTX 570 can't handle a lot of games on max settings > 60 FPS. Metro 2033, Crysis, Battlefield 3... apparently Skyrim.

460

Most modern games require a dual GPU solution to play > 60 FPS at max settings, including AA, AO, shadows, etc. A GTX 570 will, however, easily max out any game without those extra options turned on. A lot of people see AA as a luxury.

That's normal, I had the same (other games) changing the processor did the work, OCing won't really change much either.

Good lord, the 550 gets murdered by a freaking 5770?! It's over 20% slower in that bench. And this is supposed to be a $140 card?

What the hell Nvidia?

Skyrim only runs on two threads. Yes it's stupid in this day and age when quads is becoming the norm, but you better get that Phenom at 4 Ghz at least.
