LSI 9265-8i vs LSI 9260-4i w/Crucial C300 SSDs

Thread Starter
I'm considering adding a 6Gb/s SATA III RAID controller to my Rampage II Gene (ICH10R w/ SATA II controller) motherboard, as I have a spare PCI Express 16x slot. The two SSDs I'm thinking of connecting to it are Crucial C300 256GB drives. The question is, is the newer LSI 9265-8i worth the cost, or will a 9260-4i do the job? This will be my first RAID card.

Also I see Adaptec makes a 6805E card, I know performance-wise it's not comparable to the LSI, but I do like the end-facing ports on that card, plus Adaptec's customer support is supposed to be better than LSI. I'm trying to gauge opinion and comparable systems, as I heard LSI cards are not recognisable on some motherboards.

Thanks.

The problem with the motherboards has been fixed to my knowledge with the lsi cards and later firmwares.

it depends upon what raid set you will be running, and the loadings that you will be getting.

raid 5/6 will definitely benefit big time with the 9265.

either controller will require fastpath to work up to snuff with SSD raid. there are a lot of benchmarks of the 9265 with 8 x c300s over at thessdreview.com.

when it comes down to it, the adaptec is not even close to the lsi cards in performance. different leagues!

I already decided on the LSI 9265-8i, in RAID 0 with dual SSDs. I *was* going to get two Crucial M4 256GB SSDs, but want to wait on the reviews of the latest Corsair Performance Pro 256GB - see how it fairs in comparison to the M4.
