Going to SB, Build advice

Thread Starter
A have decided to go to the Dark side, and get a Sandy bridge. I am experienced when it comes to AMD but not so much on the Intel side. I am planning on getting an i7-2700k and Asus Maximus IV Extreme-z, I will reuse the other components from my current sig rig. I would like to get some opinions on this proposed build. And yes I know that SB-E and Ivy are coming out soon but I don't want to spend $500 for a new x79 board and another $600 for a 3930k, and the 3820 is not a k model so it would not OC very easily. Also before you all ask why I choose the 2700k because being a higher binned 2600k they have a better chance at being a good OC chip. I know that a 2600k can OC as high as the 2700k but the 2700k will have a better chance of OCing well. So opinions on the board or its compatibility with other components would be appreciated and what would be the highest OC I can expect to see from it keeping Vcore under 1.375v?

1. Don't know why you call it the "dark side" - i call it the bright side, having something to look forward to, light at the end of the tunnel, etc smile.gif
2. The CPU and Motherboard that you have proposed are good, though I personally think (from experience) the Asus WS Revolution is a better board (better slot spacing, less expensive, does better in benches), but thats just my 2 cents smile.gif
3. It will of course all depend on your chip what it can do at that voltage, usually you can get in the 4.5 - 4.6ghz range with that voltage, anything higher is going to require a boost in voltage.
4. I would of course recommend a big upgrade in GPU power, that would actually make more sense from a gaming standpoint than going with a different CPU/Motherboard setup as you will get significantly higher gains, and can upgrade to SB when other things come out and prices drop smile.gif

well I will look at this WS board I chose the MIVE-Z because all the bench mark I saw it blew all the other boards away. So 4.6ghz is likely the max thats consistent with what the people at overclockers.com said. (I went there only because OCN was down). Though I have seen some people that have stabilized the 2700k at 5ghz with only 1.33v but you have to be pretty lucky to get a chip like that. And the reason I am not looking at better GPU is that I really don't do PC gaming, (xbox360) so really the main use for my sig rig has been BOINC since i am having a difficult time getting multi core folding to work. So I thought about it and really a faster CPU would be more of a gain and everyone kept saying that the 1090T would bottleneck a 6990.
